Box Score SALISBURY, Md. -- Meaghan Galvin and
Hanna Slough both capped off the year by establishing new single-season program records, but the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team could not keep pace with top-seeded Salisbury as the Captains dropped a 21-4 decision during the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
During the game, Galvin led the offense with a pair of goals against Salisbury. Both of her tallies came from the eight-meter arc, which bumped her total to 17 free-position goals this season. That establishes a new program record, topping the old mark of 15 set by
Ashton Marshall during the 2012 campaign.
On the defensive end, Slough contributed eight saves for the Captains. She wraps up the year with 171 stops, which stands as the highest total in the CAC this season and establishes a new all-time program record. Lindsay Naill previously set the mark with 166 saves in 2005 and 2006 before
Hannah Wilkerson matched that total in 2011.
Along with Sunday's record-breakers, Marshall and
Emily Johnson continued to build upon the marks they set earlier in the year. Against Salisbury, Marshall chipped in with the 247th goal of her career, which easily outdistances the next closest Captain. Johnson also caused her 40th turnover of the year and the 89th of her decorated career. Both of those totals also stand as CNU records.
Unfortunately, all of Sunday's history could not overcome the top-seeded Sea Gulls, who improved to 17-1 on the year and advanced to CAC championship game. Christopher Newport wraps up the season with a 10-8 record during the program's first year competing in the CAC.
From the outset, Salisbury controlled possession and pulled away quickly. The reigning national champions tossed 10 goals on the board before CNU broke through at the 14-minute mark in the first half. On the play,
Jessica Singer slipped free on a sprint in front of the goal. After Marshall hit her with a pass from the near side of the arc, Singer slammed on the breaks, cut back, and found open spaces for the squad's first goal and the 142nd of her incredible career.
After that point, the Sea Gulls pieced together another run and used a seven-goal spurt to grab a 17-1 lead with 22 minutes remaining in regulation. With the victory out-of-reach, the Captains still showed heart and put together a nice effort in the second half. At the 19-minute mark,
Erin Callahan controlled the ball on the near side of the arc. After Marshall made a hard run through the zone, Callahan flipped to the senior, who unloaded a dart for the squad's second goal.
Later, the team orchestrated a solid defensive stand. Slough made a pair of stellar stops off free-position attempts, while
Morgan Smith forced her second turnover of the game. Johnson also disrupted a Salisbury run and caused a miscue before Galvin got on the board with a bullet off an eight-meter attempt at the 10-minute mark.
Although Salisbury eventually extended its lead back to 17 with minutes remaining, Galvin came through with one final tally off a free-position shot in the waning moments of regulation to cap off the year.
During the game, Galvin also collected three draw controls, increasing her total to a team-high 66 this season. That stands as a new freshman record and is tied for the second-most in a single-season by any player in program history. Callahan also had four draw controls to go along with her assist against the Sea Gulls.
Overall, Salisbury held a 35-10 lead in shots and a 13-7 edge in ground balls. The hosts also controlled 15 of the game's 27 draws, including 11 in the first-half.
