Earlier this month, Salisbury and CNU met for a CAC regular season battle in Newport News on April 8. The Sea Gulls eventually walked away with an 18-10 victory, marking their 12th straight win against the Captains. During the game,
Ashton Marshall scored four times, while
Hanna Slough made 10 saves. SU was led by Shelby Nemecek, who collected seven points during the contest.
Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport ranks second in the conference with a 13.18 goals-per-game average. Just as solid on the defensive end, the Captains sit third in the league with a .490 save percentage and second with 166 caused turnovers.
Marshall has been the focal point on the offensive end, ranking first in the CAC with 78 points. The most prolific scorer in program history, she enters Sunday four goals shy of 250 for her career. She currently has 57 this year, which places her second in the conference and seventh on the program's all-time single-season scoring list.
Well-balanced on the attack, Christopher Newport has three other players who rank among the conference's top-10 in scoring this year.
Meaghan Galvin leads all freshmen and ranks fifth overall with 59 points, while
Jessica Singer and
Erin Callahan are tied for seventh with 56. Galvin also ranks sixth with 40 goals, and Callahan is fourth with 23 assists.
Slough has anchored the back line with 163 saves, which leads the CAC and ranks 18th in the nation. She has been helped by an imposing defensive unit led by senior
Emily Johnson. Currently, Johnson has caused 39 turnovers, which stands as a new CNU single-season mark. Fellow fourth-year standout
Morgan Smith has also caused 22 miscues, while
Kirsten Mendelsohn has forced 15.
Salisbury enters the postseason following a 12-8 setback against Cortland State on April 20. That loss snapped a 39-game winning streak, which included the 2013 National Championship. The Sea Gulls have been led by a strong defense, which has limited the opposition to a league-low 6.24 goals-per-game. Ashton Wheatley has been at the forefront of that effort and ranks second in the league with a .513 save percentage.
On the offensive end, Shelby Nemecek has a team-high 52 goals, while Bethany Baer has 41 points and 37 draw controls. Shannon Carta has also dished out 21 assists to go along with 25 goals.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the CAC Championship game on Saturday, May 3. York and Mary Washington will battle for the other spot in the title game this weekend.
