NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Entering the final week of the regular season, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will kick off the stretch run on Wednesday when CNU hosts Southern Virginia at 4 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.

Following a 16-5 victory over Marymount in their last outing on Saturday, the Captains enter the contest with an 8-6 record, including a 3-3 mark in league action. The squad currently sits fifth in the Capital Athletic Conference standings and has clinched a berth in the upcoming playoffs.

Southern Virginia enters Wednesday's game with a 1-10 overall record. Although the Knights are a member of the CAC, their games do not count towards the conference standings this year as the program is still a provisional member of the NCAA.

In their last outing, the Captains pieced together a well-rounded performance as the squad ran past Marymount, 16-5. During the game, the offense exploded for 10 goals in the first half, while the defense shut out the Saints after halftime to seal the victory. Ashton Marshall scored five times during the game, and Emily Johnson caused three turnovers.

With her performance, Johnson set a new single-season record for caused turnovers with 32. That total also ranks second in the CAC this season.

Along with Johnson's defensive exploits, Morgan Smith has also caused 20 turnovers, while Kirsten Mendelsohn has forced 14. On the back end, Hanna Slough leads the conference with 143 saves and has compiled a 10.43 goals-against-average.

Marshall has been the top threat offensively and ranks third in the conference with 45 goals and 60 points. Her 15 assists also stand 10th overall. Fellow senior Jessica Singer has pieced together an excellent season as well and ranks eighth in the CAC with 33 goals.

The underclassmen have also been strong this year. Freshman Meaghan Galvin ranks fourth in the conference with 53 points and 36 goals, while Erin Callahan sits fifth with 19 assists. Kylie Chaplin also sits fifth on the team with 25 goals, while Rachel Wall has scored in each of the last two games.

Southern Virginia has been led by Zoe Bradshaw, who has a team-high 15 goals. Rainey Whitworth also has 12 goals and 14 caused turnovers, while Kathryn Lyman has anchored the squad between the pipes and compiled a .305 save percentage to go along with a 14.95 goals-against-average.
