Emily Johnson Sets Defensive Record as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Topples Marymount, 16-5

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Senior Emily Johnson set a new single-season program record for caused turnovers and equaled the career mark with another impressive performance on Saturday as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team stormed past Marymount, 16-5, during a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at Long Bridge Park.

During the contest, Johnson posted a team-high three caused turnovers, which bumped her total this year to 32. That trumps the old single-season program record of 29 set back Kelly Lane last year. Johnson also increased her career total to 81, which is now tied with former teammate Monica Evans for the most in CNU history.

On the offensive side, Ashton Marshall continued her sensational senior season with a game-high six points, including five goals. Jessica Singer also recorded a hat-trick, while Meaghan Galvin had four points and three draw controls. Erin Callahan and Kylie Chaplin contributed two goals apiece as well.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 8-6 on the season, including 3-3 in CAC action. Marymount sits at 8-5 with a 2-3 mark in league play.

In the early going, the two teams traded blows and found themselves deadlocked at two despite a pair of early strikes by Chaplin. After that point, the Captains found their footing. Galvin got things rolling and broke the tie after forcing a turnover, scooping up the loose ball, and assisting on Marshall's first goal.

Later, the squad put together another impressive defensive stand before the offense broke loose. During a suffocating eight-minute stretch, Kirsten Mendelsohn forced a turnover before Johnson did the same with her record-breaker at the 14-minute mark. Hanna Slough also came up with a big save off a free-position attempt to keep the Marymount attack under wraps.

Still holding a slim one-goal lead, the offense pieced together a blistering assault to grab a five-goal halftime advantage. During the surge, Singer and Marshall kicked things off with two straight scores before Galvin added back-to-back rockets during a thrilling 40-second window that pushed the lead to 7-2.

Looking for more, Callahan added a tracer off an eight-meter shot with two minutes remaining. Although the Saints were able to strike twice in a 14-second spurt, Marshall and Singer fought back and landed the final two blows of the first half to secure a 10-5 edge.

Following the break, Marshall and Callahan continued the onslaught with goals in the first three minutes of action before the defense orchestrated one of its finest stretches of the season. Clamping down on the MU attack, Johnson forced two more turnovers during a 13-minute span, while Slough brushed aside a pair of on-target shots to keep the opposition at bay.

Marshall also continued her work on the offensive end with her fifth goal at 20:18 before assisting on Singer's final score with 13 minutes left to grab an imposing 14-5 advantage. Following a Marymount timeout, the Captains orchestrated one final surge after the stoppage to close out the win. During the waning moments, Slough made two more saves before Savanah Cummings added a pair of stops in relief to seal the second-half shutout.

On the offensive end, Kirsten Mendelsohn scored off a free-position attempt with six minutes left before Rachel Wall added the final nail off a pass from Jessica Kelly to seal the 16-5 triumph.

Overall, CNU held a 31-23 edge in shots and a 19-16 lead in ground balls. Although Marymount secured 12 of the game's 23 draws, the Captains forced six turnovers to help control possession.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the team hosts Southern Virginia in a 4 p.m. battle at Captains Turf Field.
