CNU Women’s Lacrosse Heads to Mary Washington for a CAC Showdown on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will continue its Capital Athletic Conference road swing on Wednesday when the squad heads to Mary Washington for a 4 p.m. showdown at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

After topping Frostburg State, 10-9, in overtime on Saturday, the Captains improved to 6-4 on the season, including 2-1 in league play. Mary Washington, who is receiving votes in the latest IWLCA National Poll, enters the game with a 7-3 record. The Eagles are also 1-1 in conference action, including a 13-6 setback against top-ranked Salisbury over the weekend.

In their last outing, the Captains pieced together a thrilling comeback to topple Frostburg State in overtime. During the contest, Meaghan Galvin scored four times, including a pair in the extra session. Fellow freshman Erin Callahan also struck three times and added an assist. On the defensive end, Emily Johnson caused three turnovers and scooped up four ground balls, while Hanna Slough notched nine saves to earn the victory.

So far this season, Galvin leads CNU and ranks third in the conference with 26 goals. Her 38 points also place her fourth among league competitors. Not to be outdone, Ashton Marshall and Jessica Singer also rank among the CAC's top-10 goal scorers, while Callahan has been the chief facilitator. In 10 games, Callahan has 14 assists. Galvin and Marshall also have at least 10 helpers apiece.

On the defensive end, Slough leads the league with 101 saves, which is already tied for the ninth-most in a single-season in CNU history. She has also benefited from an outstanding back line, including Johnson, who ranks third in the conference with 23 caused turnovers. Singer, Morgan Smith, and Kirsten Mendelsohn have all forced at least 10 miscues as well.

Mary Washington, who is currently 10-0 all-time against CNU, enters Wednesday's game with a strong 4-1 mark at home this season. Jenna Petrucelli has been the squad's top offensive threat and leads the CAC with 44 goals. Corinne Wiederkehr has also been outstanding, collecting 15 assists, which ranks third in the league.

The UMW defense has been paced by Kelly Dean, who has compiled a .425 save percentage and a 9.71 goals-against-average. Taylor Paige has also seen time between the pipes, earning three starts while producing an 8.76 goals-against-average. Petrucelli leads the team with 12 caused turnovers, while Emily Atkinson and Megan Gersbeck have 11 apiece.
