FROSTBURG, Md. -- Freshman
Meaghan Galvin exploded for four goals, including a pair in overtime, as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team pieced together an outstanding comeback to upend Frostburg State, 10-9, during a Capital Athletic Conference battle at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
During the contest, Galvin scored twice in the second half before finding the back of the net two more times in overtime to lead CNU to the victory. Fellow freshman
Erin Callahan also chipped in with four points, including a huge goal late in the second-half that momentarily gave the Captains the lead.
On the defensive end,
Emily Johnson caused three turnovers, while
Shannon Fluharty added a pair to anchor the back line.
Hanna Slough also contributed nine saves to earn the victory.
With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 6-4 on the season, including 2-1 in league action. The setback drops Frostburg State to 1-9 with an 0-3 mark in conference play.
After finding themselves trailing 6-2 early in the second half, the Captains mounted an incredible comeback bid. Needing a couple of quick scores to get back in the game, the visitors hit the ground running.
Sam Puglisi opened the second-half run with a bullet following an assist by
Kylie Chaplin. Later, after Slough made a huge save to clamp down on Frostburg State's response, Callahan came through with her second goal of the contest to pull CNU back within two at 6-4.
With 20 minutes remaining, the defense stepped up with a suffocating stand in the middle of the period. Fluharty caused a turnover shortly after Callahan's goal before Johnson forced back-to-back miscues and scooped up a pair of ground balls to help CNU control possession. Later, with the ball in the FSU zone, Galvin slipped free and unloaded a dart at the 15-minute mark to cut the deficit down to one at 6-5.
Although Frostburg State retaliated three minutes later, the Captains were unfazed and continued to blitz the Bobcat defense. Dylan Teitalbaum momentarily held up against the relentless attack, making three straight saves for FSU, but CNU continued its onslaught. With just over six minutes remaining,
Ashton Marshall laced a one-timer to the back of the net to pull the visitors within one at 7-6. Three minutes later, after
Kirsten Mendelsohn forced a turnover, Galvin continued her late-game surge with another laser to knot the game at seven.
With time winding down, Slough clamped down on a free-position attempt to keep the game tied before her offense struck again. With just over 80 seconds remaining in the game, Callahan was fouled in the circle and earned an eight-meter shot. Capitalizing on the opportunity, she buried her third goal of the game to give CNU its first lead at 8-7.
Despite a late goal by Frostburg State, which forced overtime, the momentum was firmly planted on the CNU sideline. Refusing to let their second-half surge go to waste, the Captains capped off their comeback bid with a tremendous performance in the bonus session.
Although the hosts took possession early in the overtime period, Johnson and Marshall both caused turnovers to take control. With the ball, Galvin took over. The freshman phenom blistered a rocket through the FSU defense to break the deadlock with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first half of overtime. Less than 10 seconds later, after Johnson controlled the ensuing draw, Galvin gave the squad a two-goal cushion with her fourth goal of the contest.
After the teams switched sides, Christopher Newport made its late lead hold-up. Slough made another textbook save, and although the visitors were able to sneak one past in the waning seconds of the game, the defense clamped down and sealed the 10-9 victory.
Evenly matched on the stat sheet, CNU and Frostburg State each uncorked 24 shots, while the Captains held a 22-15 edge in ground balls. The Bobcats were strong on the draw, securing 13 of the game's 21 battles.
Although the game ended well, the beginning did not go quite as scripted. The hosts rolled out to a 4-0 lead in the first 14 minutes before the Captains found their footing. Needing to make a run, Callahan stepped up. The first-year standout blasted a goal to get CNU on the board before assisting on a score by
Jessica Singer at 14:24, which cut the squad's deficit down to two at 4-2.
From there, Frostburg State stung the Captains with two straight goals, but Christopher Newport never flinched and orchestrated an epic second-half rally to snatch the victory.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday when the squad heads to Fredericksburg, Va. for a 4 p.m. battle with Mary Washington.
