Live Stats

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
After a four-game road swing over the past two weeks, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will return home for a Capital Athletic Conference battle with St. Mary's at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Captains Turf Field.

Following a successful road trip, which saw the squad post three victories, CNU enters this weekend with a 5-3 record, including a 1-0 mark in CAC action. St. Mary's currently sits at 3-4. Saturday's game will be the Seahawks' first conference tilt of the year.

Although Christopher Newport is new to the CAC this season, the squad is quite familiar with St. Mary's. The two programs have been non-conference foes since 2001. Overall, they have battled seven times with the Seahawks holding a slim 4-3 advantage in the series. The Captains did win last year's battle, 15-7, in Maryland.

In their last outing, CNU received major contributions from senior Ashton Marshall, who scored a season-high six goals to go along with a pair of assists. She is one of four Captains who currently rank among the top-five in the league in points. Meaghan Galvin, the reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week, has a conference-high 34 points, while Marshall sits third with 30. Freshman Erin Callahan and senior Jessica Singer round out the leaders with 29 and 28, respectively.

Not to be overlooked, the defense has also been outstanding this year. Emily Johnson stands second in the conference with 19 caused turnovers, while Morgan Smith is fourth with 14. Hanna Slough has been a force in goal as well, notching a .516 save percentage to go along with a 9.48 goals-against-average. Her 83 total saves this year are the most by any goalie in the conference.

St. Mary's is led by sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman, who leads the CAC with 14 assists and ranks second with 31 points. Along with the second-year standout, Tori Poffenberger has scored a team-best 18 goals, while Newman and Christy Bishop have 17 apiece. Ali Moulis also boasts 12 points for the Seahawks.

On the defensive end, Kayla Dunn has anchored the team between the pipes. So far this year, she has compiled a .468 save percentage and a 10.57 goals-against-average. Along with their goalie, the Seahawks have also benefited from strong play by Paige Decker, who has 11 caused turnovers and 12 ground balls.
