CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as Washington College pulled away early and held on to capture a 15-7 decision against the Captains on Sunday afternoon at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
During the contest, CNU received two-goal efforts from Kylie Chaplin, Meaghan Galvin, and Ashton Marshall. Erin Callahan and Emily Johnson also chipped in with two assists apiece, while Sam Puglisi caused two turnovers and added a helper as well.
The setback drops Christopher Newport to 4-3 on the season. Washington College improves to 3-2 and extends the program's 20-game winning streak at home against non-conference opponents.
Early on, the hosts had the upper-hand and pounced on the Captains. Although
Hanna Slough made three quick saves, including two great stops on back-to-back darts during a 30-second surge, the Shorewomen continued to attack. Eventually, Washington posted three straight goals to open the contest before CNU found its footing.
At the 24-minute mark, Galvin earned a free-position attempt and immediately converted after burying a shot in the low right corner of the net to put the visitors on the board. After the Shorewomen responded with their fourth goal, Slough made a solid point-blank save on the next shot before Johnson took control and cleared the ball.
After storming to the top of the arc, she sent a feed to Marshall, who settled on the doorstep and unloaded a bullet to cut CNU's deficit down to two at 4-2 with 18 minutes remaining in the first half.
Unfortunately, the game began to slip away after that score. Over the final 16 minutes of the first half, Washington College scored five unanswered goals to grab a 9-2 lead entering halftime. Following the break, the hosts added two more tallies during the first three minutes to put the Captains on edge.
Staring at a nine-goal deficit, Christopher Newport continued to battle. After teaming up for one of the squad's two first-half scores, Johnson and Marshall worked their magic again. This time, Johnson made a great defensive play to check the ball away from a Washington attacker before sprinting into the offensive zone alongside Marshall.
With a two-on-one break, Johnson dished to her teammate on the far side of the arc before Marshall bounced a dart into the net for her second score of the contest. Four minutes later, the squad benefited from another outstanding defensive play as Puglisi forced a turnover before Callahan took control and lobbed a perfect pass to Galvin, who cut the deficit down to seven with her second goal at 23:23.
Despite the two-goal swing, CNU could not continue its comeback bid as Emily Hubley scored three straight goals for Washington to secure a 14-4 lead with 16 minutes remaining in regulation.
Although the game slowly slipped out of reach, CNU never relented and continued to attack. Following a yellow card, Chaplin took advantage of the situation after an assist by Puglisi to pull Christopher Newport back within single digits. Just over 10 minutes later, she chipped in with her second goal at 3:04. Shortly thereafter,
Jessica Singer took a pass from Callahan and made a nice run to the near post to wrap up the scoring with a seed just inside the pipe.
Overall, Washington out-shot CNU, 35-20 and controlled 17 of the game's 24 draws. The Captains did some strong work on the defensive end, forcing nine turnovers, including two by Puglisi, Johnson, and
Kirsten Mendelsohn. Slough also finished with nine saves against the Shorewomen.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday as the squad travels to Bridgewater for a 3 p.m. showdown.
