DOVER, Del. -- Riding a three-game winning streak, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to extend that roll this weekend when the Captains head to Wesley on Saturday at noon for their first ever Capital Athletic Conference game before battling Washington College in a non-conference showdown on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chestertown, Maryland.
After ripping off three straight wins, CNU sits at 3-2 on the year. Wesley is currently 2-1 after a setback at Greensboro on Wednesday, while Washington College is currently receiving votes in the IWLCA National Poll and boasts a 2-2 record.
Unfamiliar with their upcoming foes, the Captains have never faced Wesley or Washington since the CNU program was founded in 2001.
Following a pair of victories in Newport News, Christopher Newport extended its streak on Wednesday with a 13-7 triumph at Virginia Wesleyan. During the contest,
Meaghan Galvin came through with six points, including four goals, while
Erin Callahan and
Jessica Singer each scored three times as well.
Ashton Marshall also made history during the game, becoming only the second Captain in CNU history with 200 career goals after wrapping up the scoring in the second half.
So far this year, CNU has benefitted from solid play from its freshman class, including Callahan and Galvin. Callahan currently leads the squad with 26 points and is the only player in program history to post a hat-trick in each of her first five collegiate contests. Galvin has been just as strong, ranking second on the team with 21 points while leading the way with 26 draw controls.
Mariah Ginebra has also started every game this year and forced four turnovers on the defensive end.
In addition to Ginebra, the CNU defense has been led by
Emily Johnson, who has 13 caused turnovers, and
Morgan Smith, who has forced eight.
Hanna Slough has also been strong between the pipes, compiling a .509 save percentage and a 10.33 goals-against-average.
Wesley comes into Saturday's game averaging 13 goals per game, highlighted by a 19-5 victory over Merchant Marine on March 2. Rylee Gould headlines the team with 17 points, while Jorden Lutz has scored 11 times. Senior Kirsten Ward has also been sound this season, posting nine goals, including three in her last outing against Greensboro.
On the defensive end, Katherine Cooke has been the Wolverines' leading goalie with a 7.56 goals-against-average, while Samantha Brannigan has also appeared in a pair of games and made 11 saves. Lutz has been a disruptive force on the back end, causing a team-best 10 turnovers while collecting 15 ground balls and 15 draw controls.
Washington College is also coming off a setback in its last outing after falling to Fredonia State, 12-8, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Despite the stumble, the squad has continued to receive votes in the national poll and boasts an imposing attack, which has scored over 14 goals per game. Katherine Vincent headlines that group with 13 goals this year, while Alli Dudley has dished out 11 assists.
Similar to Wesley, the Shorewomen have also had a pair of goalies see action this year as Haylee Solomon has a 10.95 goals-against-average, while fellow freshman Allison Remenapp leads the way with a .406 save percentage. Liz Godorov has been Washington's top defender, causing seven turnovers during the year.
