NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University tennis teams swept Washington College (Md.) on Thursday afternoon, as both the men and women pulled away for their first home win of the spring. Both matches were shortened after CNU clinched the winning point in singles play, with the men taking a 5-1 victory, and the women earning a 5-2 win.Â
The Captains took a 2-1 lead after doubles in both matchups. On the men's side, rookies
Steven Boslet and
Sam Thomson improved to 6-3 playing together at No. 1 doubles, dropping Vishnu Rajes and Marc Cywinski (8-5).
Arttu Fiva and
Michael Dodd also won 8-5 at No. 3, besting Joel Novick and Zachary Novick.Â
The women also pulled ahead after doubles, winning at No. 2 and 3.
Jackie Gaine and
Logan Eldridge edged their opponents, Blair King and Emily Evans, at No. 2, in an 8-6 final. Then, rookie
Anna Chekalkina returned to the CNU lineup for her first appearance of the spring, pairing with
Kelsey Clark for an 8-2 win over Amy Stevens and Tricia Valerio at No. 3.Â
In singles play, the CNU men got quick wins at the top three spots to clinch the 5-1 win. Thomson, Boslet and
Chiraag Shetty won in order, dropping just seven games combined. Senior
Joona Rahko clinched his first set and was leading in the second when play was stopped after the clinching win by Shetty.
Rookies
Logan Eldridge and
Katie Carlson led the Captains women in singles play, combining for just one game lost. Eldridge won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, dropping Marielle McIntyre, and Carlson had a flawless 6-0, 6-0 win over Emily Evans at No. 4. Gaine clinched the match for CNU when she defeated Kang (6-3, 6-3) at No. 3.
The CNU women improve to 3-6 this season, handing Washington College (2-1) its first loss of the season. The Captains men's team improved to 6-3, dropping the Shoremen to 2-3 this season.Â
