Ashton Marshall Joins Historic Club as CNU Women’s Lacrosse Surges Past Virginia Wesleyan, 13-7

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior Ashton Marshall became just the second Captain in program history with 200 career goals and freshman Meaghan Galvin exploded for six points, including five in the second half, as the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team surged past Virginia Wesleyan, 13-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Foster Field.

Late in the second half, Marshall capped off the game's scoring with her 200th career goal to join an exclusive club. She and Kaitlin Quigley are the only two Captains to ever reach that benchmark. Marshall is also just one of five active players at any level in the NCAA to score 200 times.

Along with Marshall's historic feat, the Captains received major contributions from Galvin, who scored four times and added two assists against the Marlins. The first-year standout also posted five draw controls and a pair of ground balls to balance out a well-rounded performance on Wednesday.

Erin Callahan and Jessica Singer also collected three goals apiece, while Hanna Slough recorded eight saves to pick up the victory. With the win, Christopher Newport bumps its winning streak to three games and improves to 3-2 on the season. The setback drops Virginia Wesleyan to 2-3.

Although the Captains found themselves trailing 6-4 entering halftime, the squad stormed out of the break and scored at will in the second half. Less than five minutes into the new stanza, CNU had already erased its deficit. Singer got things rolling with a dart at 28:11 before Galvin and Callahan added a pair of rapid-fire tallies during a two-minute onslaught, which gave the visitors a 7-6 advantage.

Holding a slim edge on the scoreboard, Christopher Newport wasted no time extending the lead and putting the game out of reach. Once again, Galvin was at the center of the action and helped generate the squad's next two goals. With 23 minutes left, she fed the ball across the arc to Callahan, who unloaded a rocket for her third goal of the game, which capped off her fifth straight hat-trick. Just over two minutes later, Galvin dished to Singer, who quickly added her third goal to push the lead to 9-6.

Although Virginia Wesleyan momentarily whittled its deficit back down to two, the Captains responded with a vengeance. Galvin kicked off the final surge with a tracer off a free-position attempt with just over 15 minutes remaining. Later, the CNU defense stood up and had a nice run to keep the lead at three. Slough made a tough save off a point-blank shot before Singer and Emily Johnson each forced turnovers to keep the Marlin attack on its heels.

Following the defensive stand, Galvin got things rolling on the offensive end again after curling around the near post and scoring off a feed from Marshall. Two minutes later, Kylie Chaplin joined the fun and pushed the score to 12-7 before Marshall capped off the game with her historic goal. On the play, she and Chaplin broke free on a fast-break following another save by Slough. With room to work, Chaplin dished to Marshall, who fired a seed into the back of the net to seal the 13-7 triumph.

Overall, CNU held a commanding 32-20 edge in shots and controlled 12 of the game's 22 draws. The Captains also caused nine turnovers, including three apiece by Johnson and Singer.

Although the game ended well for Christopher Newport, the squad hit a rough patch at the beginning. Within the first two minutes, the Marlins scored twice to get the Captains off balance. Later, VWC added three more tallies to push the lead to 5-0 with just 10 minutes off the clock. Fortunately, CNU had an answer and began chipping away at the deficit in the middle of the first half.

After Virginia Wesleyan's fifth goal, the Captains started pounding away. The team won the next draw and eventually ripped four shots, including three in rapid succession. Despite coming away empty-handed during the first wave, the squad continued to attack and Rachel Wall found an opening with 14 minutes remaining in the half to put the visitors on the board.

Just 26 seconds after their first strike, the Captains added another one as Singer unloaded a bullet off a free-position shot to pull the squad back within three at 5-2. Later, following a nice defensive stand, which included two saves by Slough, Galvin and Callahan tacked on free-position goals at the tail end of the half to pull CNU back within two at 6-4.

The late resurgence by the Captains quickly carried over into the second half as Galvin lit up the VWC defense before Marshall made history to seal the comeback and extend the winning streak.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the squad travels to Dover, Delaware for its first ever Capital Athletic Conference tilt. The Captains will battle Wesley at noon in the CAC showdown.
