Men's Basketball Erupts for 56 Points in Second Half in 91-76 Triumph over Southern Virginia

Box Score
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport stretched a five-point halftime lead to as many as 17 in the second half, as the Captains posted their fourth win in their last five games. CNU downed Southern Virginia at the Freeman Center Monday night, 91-76, to improve to 14-5 on the season and sweep the season series with the Knights.

"You've got to take care of business at home, and we did that tonight," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "They were a much better team than the one we beat back in early December. We were able to use a balanced attack, we got to the foul line and made some big shots."

The game was the second of four in an eight-day stretch for the Captains, and for the second straight game, CNU never trailed. The Captains jumped to a 12-0 lead out of the gate and opened the second half with a 21-11 run.

CNU had four players in double figures, led by senior Tra Benefield's 22 points. Freshman Tim Daly registered a career-high 20 points, followed by sophomore Connor Laframboise's 14 and junior Mike Cherry's 11.

The Captains made 57 percent of their shots for the night, and also connected on 20 of 26 free throws (77 percent). CNU out-rebounded Southern Virginia, 31-29, as Benefield topped the team with seven boards to go with his 22 points.

CNU is now 13-0 this season when leading at halftime.

Southern Virginia, now 4-12, was led by junior Preston Eaton, who scored 19 points. Senior Kenny Hart came off the bench to score 15 and junior Chris Baker contributed a dozen.

Christopher Newport heads to Salisbury, MD, Wednesday night to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Maggs Center.
