NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to bounce back after a pair of hard-fought overtime setbacks when the squad hosts Randolph-Macon on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.
CNU enters the contest at 0-2 despite taking Washington & Lee and Roanoke to extra sessions. Randolph-Macon sits at 1-0 following an 18-9 victory over Greensboro on Wednesday.
One of Christopher Newport's longest-running rivalries, the Captains have battled the Yellow Jackets 11 times with R-MC holding a slim 6-5 edge in the all-time series. CNU has won the previous two meetings, including a 12-10 victory in Ashland last year. During that contest, current Captains
Ashton Marshall and
Kylie Chaplin both recorded hat-tricks, while
Hanna Slough notched 10 saves to earn the victory.
For those fans unable to make it out to the Saturday's game, all of the action will be available through live stats on CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the women's lacrosse schedule page.
So far this season, the Captains have boasted a well-rounded offense, featuring six players with at least two goals. Freshmen
Meaghan Galvin and
Erin Callahan lead the way with six goals apiece. Galvin shined against Roanoke, posting a team-high seven points. Callahan has been equally impressive and enters Saturday as the only player in CNU history to record hat-tricks in each of her first two collegiate contests.
Among the veterans, Marshall has five goals and a pair of assists, while Chaplin has scored four times. On the defensive end,
Emily Johnson leads the team with five caused turnovers, and Slough boasts 22 saves in 133 minutes of work. Galvin also leads the team with 12 draw controls and 10 ground balls to balance out a well-rounded stat line.
Randolph-Macon enters the weekend with one game under its belt after rolling to a nine-goal victory over Greensboro. Jenelle Whitman paced the offense with four goals and an assist, while Shannon Jamieson and Katie Russo scored three times apiece. Alyssa Chavez and Audrey Hester added a pair of goals as well.
In the net for the Yellow Jackets, freshman Jamie Langbein made five saves in just under 50 minutes of action to earn the victory. Whitman also contributed on the defensive end, forcing two turnovers while scooping up 10 ground balls.
