NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will open up its 2014 home slate on Saturday at 4 p.m. when the squad welcomes in Roanoke for a non-conference clash at Captains Turf Field.

After posting seven straight victories at home last year, CNU returns to its cozy confines looking to continue its run of success in Newport News. The Captains enter the weekend at 0-1 after dropping a hard-fought 12-11 decision at Washington & Lee on Sunday. Roanoke also comes in at 0-1 following a 17-2 setback against top-ranked Salisbury over the weekend.

One of the program's longest-running rivalries, Christopher Newport is 4-6 all-time against Roanoke. The Captains won the previous meeting in 2013 after rolling to a 16-7 victory in Salem. Current seniors Ashton Marshall and Jessica Singer each recorded goals during the game, while Hanna Slough picked up the victory after notching three saves.

Continuing to anchor the defense this season, Slough came through with 10 stops on Sunday against the Generals. She was helped on the back end by freshman Katie Gaskin, who caused three turnovers. Seniors Emily Johnson and Morgan Smith also forced a pair of miscues against Washington & Lee.

On the offensive end, the Captains received huge contributions from a young and dynamic attack. Erin Callahan became the first freshman in CNU history to record a hat-trick in her collegiate debut, while fellow first-year standout Meaghan Galvin came through with a pair of goals as well. Sophomore Kylie Chaplin also scored three times for Christopher Newport.

Entering the team's final game before venturing to Puerto Rico for a pair of tilts next week, Roanoke faces its second straight ranked opponent after falling to No. 1 Salisbury on Sunday. During the showdown with the Sea Gulls, Claire Feeney and Allison Bonanno came through with one goal each, while Alexa Germany was hard at work on the defensive end with three caused turnovers.

In goal for the Maroons, Lauren Curtin made 10 saves against the potent Salisbury attack, while Allison Shannon came in for the final 16 minutes and posted two stops.
