NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will continue its homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the squad hosts Ferrum in a non-conference showdown at Captains Turf Field.

In the midst of a season-opening five-game home stretch, the Captains enter the contest at 0-1 after dropping a 14-6 decision to Washington & Lee last Saturday. The Panthers stand at 0-2, including a 15-9 setback at Guilford on Wednesday.

Last week, the Captains opened the season against perennial ODAC power Washington & Lee. In a battle featuring a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from last year, the Generals escaped Newport News with the 14-6 victory. During the contest, Adam Abbate and Gregory Limon both scored a pair of goals for CNU, while Brenden Dwyer matched the all-time program record with six caused turnovers.

Christopher Newport also benefitted from some strong performances from its freshmen. First-year standouts Randy Foster and Brooks Billings both posted assists for CNU, and Nick Kirschke won 12 faceoffs. Matt Hayden also made four saves during the first half for the Captains before senior Mark Hargrove took over in goal and notched three after halftime.

In three all-time meetings between the two programs, Christopher Newport boasts a pristine 3-0 mark against Ferrum. Last year, the Captains toppled the Panthers, 6-5, in an overtime thriller during the regular season finale. Abbate was one of the stars of that contest, coming through with a goal and an assist. Limon and Aaron Chrzaszcz also scored during the game.

This year, Ferrum has stumbled in two straight road tilts to open the 2014 campaign. The squad kicked off the year with a 16-4 setback against Washington & Lee before dropping a six-goal decision to Guilford earlier this week. Nick Smith has provided the team's offensive punch, scoring seven goals so far this season. Andrew Senft has also added four assists.

On the defensive end, Dustin Browning leads the team with three caused turnovers, while Patrick Cathro has forced two and scooped up four ground balls. Damian Pulos has been a mainstay between the pipes, playing all 120 minutes while compiling 27 saves and a 15.50 goals-against-average. Cyle Moskowitz has been the primary faceoff man, winning eight of his 35 duals.
