NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- All kinds of playoff implications are on the line as the Captains take the hardwood on Saturday for the regular season finale, traveling to Marymount University for a doubleheader set to tip off at 2:00 pm. Both CNU squads have locked up a spot in next week's conference tournament, but seeding is still up for grabs.
On the women's side, nationally-ranked Christopher Newport have clinched a first-round bye, but a win would lock up a share of the Capital Athletic Conference regular season title and the top seed in next week's conference tournament. Things are a lot more complicated on the men's side, with CNU and Salisbury currently tied for fourth place, and just one game separating them from the Saints. The pivotal head-to-head matchup, along with the Salisbury result against Frostburg State, will decide the tournament seeding and who gets to host the CAC First Round game on Tuesday.
The Captains men's team is coming off a tough 69-64 setback as the CNU squad battled back and nearly erased a 23-point deficit against St. Mary's (Md.), powered by another double-double by
Tra Benefield with 27 points and 13 rebounds. CNU had won back-to-back games before the loss to the Seahawks, including a win over nationally-ranked Mary Washington. CNU is 16-8 overall with an 8-7 mark in league play
Marymount's men's team is 15-9 overall with a 7-8 mark against conference foes. While the Saints are a young team and will honor just one senior, it is a big one as their scoring leader Reed Scott will play in his last home regular season game. Averaging 14.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, Scott is one of three double-figure scorers for the Saints this season. Junior Antonio Rouse (11.4 ppg) and J.C. Hoellich (11.1 ppg) are the other two, while Jesse Konadu is just outside of double digits with 9.5 points per game.
Earlier this season, CNU defeated Marymount by seven in the Freeman Center, 76-69. Tip for the men's game is tentatively set for 4:00 pm.
The 14th-ranked CNU women will have a tough battle on their hand in Arlington as the Marymount Saints will be honoring one of their all-time greats in senior All-American Katelyn Fischer. The 5-7 senior guard is the league's all-time leader in three-point shooting and is also the program record holder for assists in a career. This season, she has led the Saints to a 15-9 overall record, including a 10-5 mark in conference play, by averaging nearly 16 points per game.
On the other side of the floor, Captains' senior
Nicole Mitchell is leading the way offensively, coming off back-to-back double-doubles. Junior
Camry Green has also been stellar of late, scoring a career-high 21 points in CNU's last contest against St. Mary's (Md.).
Tip for the women's contest is set for 2:00 pm at Verizon Sports Arena on the campus of Marymount University. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
