Junior
Jordan Miller led a stable of six players in double figures, with 17 points, as the Captains blitzed past Southern Virginia to improve to 5-2 overall this season, and 1-0 in conference action.
CNU led wire-to-wire in the record-breaking performance, registering the fourth most points in program history. The three games where CNU scored more were also home games, but played in Ratcliffe Gymnasium prior to the Freeman Center opening its doors, making Wednesday's output the finest performance to date in the 14-year old building. It was also the first time a CNU women's team scored 100 points in the Freeman Center.
Leading the charge early was junior shooting guard
Jordan Miller, who picked up 12 first-half points in swift fashion. Despite playing just eight first-half minutes, the third-year player knocked down 4-of-5 shots including a pair of three-pointers to lead all scorers at the intermission. The rest of the starting lineup combined for 15 points, while going 7-for-9 from the floor as the Captains boasted a tenacious offensive attack in the first half. As a team, CNU hit 60% of its shots from the field in the first half, knocking down 21-of-35 attempts.
Off the bench,
Bailey Dufrene led the Captains with eight first-half points, while the rest of the reserves helped CNU post a 32-14 edge in bench scoring in the first 20 minutes. That number would grow to a relentless 70-23 edge as all 16 players saw at least eight minutes of game-time for head coach
Bill Broderick.
The second half mirrored the first, as CNU outscored the Knights, 58-39, after halftime. The team shot 54.8% from the field, hitting 23-of-42 attempts and all but one player scratched their name into the scorebook in the second half.
Miller wrapped up the game with a team-high 17 points, while fellow starters
Kendra Stone and
Camry Green added 10 points apiece. The reserves also chipped in three double-figure scoring marks, as
Makenzie Fancher, with 15,
Bailey Dufrene, with 14, and
Sam Porter, with 13, gave CNU six double figure scoring performances on the night. In the process, Green's double-double streak to start the season came to a close, as she managed 10 points but only grabbed four rebounds in 15 minutes of action. The nation's leader in double-doubles, Green is still averaging 12.6 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
The scoring was off the charts for CNU, particularly in the paint. The Captains were +50 close to the basket, outscoring the Knights, 72-22, and also managed a +22 edge in rebounding margin. Led by seven rebounds from
T'Keyah Banks, and six rebounds from
Devon Byrd, the Captains outrebounded Southern Virginia, 47-25. That total included 23 offensive rebounds, leading to 20 second-chance points.
Byrd filled up the stat sheet for the Captains, finishing with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting, grabbing six boards, dishing out four assists and picking up four steals and two blocked shots. The rookie forward played just 13 minutes.
On the other side of the court, Southern Virginia had three players in double figures, including a game-high 18 points from Ann Kuroki. Melynda Boren added 15 points and Morgan Hartvigsen pitched in 14 points while the Knights hit 47.1% from the field. Southern Virginia was plagued by turnovers, though, as CNU forced 39 giveaways with 22 steals.
CNU opens up a three-game road trip this weekend as they travel to Frostburg State University (1-4, 0-1) for a 1:00 pm tip on Saturday, December 6. Following the matchup with the Bobcats, the Captains will head out to Wesley College and Salisbury University before the holiday break.
