Camry Green added a game-high 19 points as the Captains (6-2, 2-0) cruised to an 85-49 victory at Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats fall to 1-5 overall with an 0-2 record in league play.
Defensively, the Captains had a stellar performance for the full 40 minutes, but especially in the first half. CNU managed to hold the Bobcats to just six made field goals in the opening half, as the home team hit just 26.1% from the field. The Captains earned 15 steals and forced 22 first-half turnovers, leading to 20 points off turnovers.
After a sluggish start offensively, the Captains started to spread the ball around and find open looks in the second stage of the first half. Rookie
Sam Porter, with eight points and four rebounds, and junior
Kendra Stone, with seven points and four boards, led the first-half attack that included a solid 18-of-22 performance from the free-throw line. Stone and Porter each knocked down four from the charity stripe, while five more players were a perfect 2-for-2 to build a big halftime lead.Â
At the break, CNU led, 45-14, opening up a 31-point edge while shooting 37.5% from the field.Â
In the second half, the Captains got a pair of excellent individual performances from Green and Miller. The junior shooting guard knocked down four three-point shots to add to her one in the first half, giving her 17 points and a new personal best from long range. The senior forward took over the paint and finished the game with 19 points and seven rebounds, while adding a pair of steals.Â
CNU withstood an early burst by the Bobcats, who played significantly better in the second half. Frostburg scored 35 points after intermission, while knocking down 41.4% of their shots. Ronje' James, who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, scored all 18 of her team-leading points in the second half. Tajaia Tillman added ten points and seven rebounds to the ledger for the Bobcats, but turnovers continued to plague Frostburg State.Â
Overall, CNU forced the Bobcats into 33 turnovers while grabbing 21 steals. The Captains held a 29-18 advantage in points off turnovers, and also dominated the glass, with a 25-4 edge in second-chance points. Led by seven rebounds each from Stone and Green, the Captains held a distinct 54-32 advantage over Frostburg State.Â
CNU will now take a week off for final exams before heading back out on the road to face Wesley College on December 14, followed by a trip to nationally-ranked Salisbury University on December 17.Â
