KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced the 2014 Division III Men's South-Atlantic Region teams today, listing three Captains for the third straight year. Senior forward
Jalon Brown earned his third consecutive First Team All-Region honor, while defender
Alec Faulkner, named to the second team, also earned his third career listing. Newcomer
Harry Nodwell, a sophomore midfielder, rounded out the CNU picks with third team laurels.
Every year since 2008, the Captains have had at least three players selected to the All-Region squad released by the NSCAA, and for three straight seasons Brown and Faulkner were among them. Nodwell transferred in to CNU after an All-Conference season at Averett University, and fit right in with the Captains, registering another notable campaign in 2014. All three helped lead CNU to a CAC Championship and deep into the NCAA Tournament, winning three games before suffering a penalty kick shootout loss in a 2-2 draw to Ohio Wesleyan in the Elite Eight.
Brown's selection to his third straight All-Region first team comes after he was also selected as the conference player of the year for a third consecutive season. As a sophomore, the Yorktown, Va. native was named USA South Player of the Year, and he earned back-to-back Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors as a junior and senior. One of the Captains' most dynamic players of all-time, Brown saved his finest season for last when he scored a career-high 47 points this year. He ranked ninth nationally in goals scored (20) and tenth in points.
Along the way, Brown broke the all-time scoring mark and the all-time goals record at CNU, breaking the latter with a game-winning header in the second half of the NCAA Sweet 16 win over Whitworth. It was his 52nd career scoring strike, and he set the new scoring mark with 134 points. He had a pair of hat tricks this season and scored five game-winning goals.
On the other end of the field, Faulkner had yet another strong season defending the goal for the Captains. He wrapped up his illustrious career by leaving the field for just 11 minutes this season, playing a team-high 2,524 minutes of action. The anchor of a solid CNU defense, Faulkner helped the Captains post nine shutouts and hold opponents to just 7.9 shots per game. One of the best defenders in program history, Faulkner and the rest of the back line helped post a 1.17 goals against average in front of a first-year goalkeeper. He broke the season record for minutes played and ranks second all-time in career minutes. His role in ushering the Captains back to the Elite Eight could not be minimized, as the central defender made game-saving plays all year long for head coach
Steve Shaw.
Rounding out the 2014 All-Region selections is midfielder
Harry Nodwell, collecting third team honors. The sophomore missed three games to an injury, but still managed to rank sixth on the team in scoring with five goals and two assists out of the midfield. A dangerous center-midfielder, the Devon, England native keyed many scoring plays that didn't end up in the book as assists. He picked up first team All-Conference honors in his first year in the CAC and registered the deciding goal against ninth-ranked Salisbury University in the CAC Semifinals.
The three All-Region selections helped the Captains finish the season with an overall record of 19-3-5 for a winning percentage of 79.6%. CNU reached its ninth NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history. Christopher Newport was ranked No. 7 nationally in the final NSCAA rankings of 2014.
