MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Following a pair of upset victories in the CAC Tournament already, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains will need a third in order to call themselves conference champions, as they travel to second-seeded Penn State Harrisburg (13-4-1) on Saturday for the title bout. CNU, the fifth-seed, improved to 15-3-4 when they downed the top-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls in the semifinal round, propeling the Captains into the 2014 CAC Championship Game, set for 2:00 pm.
Live stats will be available from the Lions' Soccer Field in Middletown, Pa. with links posted on the men's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com or via the Penn State Harrisburg athletics website.
One of the two programs will be putting a cap on a stellar season and earning the Capital Athletic Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Lions have an opportunity to go from worst to first with a win, after one of the nation's biggest turnarounds in 2014; the Captains, a chance to capture the program's first CAC Title in impressive fashion, with three straight wins away from home.
In order for CNU to br crowned champion, the offense will need to continue firing on all cylinders as they have all season. Coming into Saturday's contest, senior
Jalon Brown headlines a scoring offense that ranks 21st nationally after pouring in the eighth most total goals in the country this season. Brown's 40 points rank 14th nationally as he remains two goals shy of Ian MacPherson and Winston Mattheisen for the career goals scored record at CNU. Sophomore
Patrick Burns has added 33 points on 11 goals and 11 assists, ranking 16th nationally in total helpers.
Neither of the Captain's leading scorers factored into the offense on Wednesday when CNU upset top-seeded and ninth-ranked Salisbury in the CAC Semifinals. First, junior
Ryan Balfour set up a beautiful scoring strike off the foot of sophomore midfielder
Harry Nodwell, and then, senior
Alex Makumbi drilled a penalty kick goal to ice the win late in the second half. The game was a clinic in defensive efficiency, as the back line allowed just four total shots and two on-frame. Seniors
Alec Faulkner,
Stephen Landry and
Tommy O'Neal were joined by junior
Sean Christein to hold back the Sea Gulls attack, while junior goalkeeper
Sam Lesko made both saves to secure the clean sheet.
Penn State Harrisburg needed two overtime periods to get past St. Mary's (Md.) in the semifinal round, as both teams remained scoreless after regulation. A Seahawks own goal in the 104th minute led the Lions into the title game, with a chance at the school's first championship since joining the CAC in 2013-14. After a three-win season in 2013, head coach Seamus Donnelly has posted an impressive bounce-back campaign in his third year, guiding the Lions to a 13-win season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brandon Hoover continues to be a huge asset for Donnelly, as the second-year ranks third in the league in goals against average and save percentage. When CNU and PSH matched up just two weeks ago, Hoover made eight saves in a 3-1 victory, and in the CAC Semifinals, the sophomore netminder posted a career-high 10 stops. He ranks in the top 50 nationally in save percentage, knocking away over 83% of attempts on-frame. Offensively, the Lions are led by junior Aaron Kline (18 pts) and sophomore Alex Panuccio (12 pts).
The opening whistle is slated for 2:00 pm in Pennsylvania as the teams vie for the conference championship.
