Live VideoNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team begins its quest for the program's first Capital Athletic Conference Tournament Championship on Wednesday night, hosting the fourth-seeded Frostburg State University Bobcats at 6:00 pm. CNU, who wrapped up its second straight CAC regular season title and top seed in the CAC Tournament, has posted a 12-3-3 overall record, and is riding a five-game unbeaten streak heading into the semifinal matchup.
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for the Captains' home game, with links available on the women's soccer schedule at CNUsports.com.
The top-seeded Captains will face a FSU squad that captured up a win over fifth-seeded York (Pa.) in the CAC Tournament First Round. The Bobcats improved to 12-4-4 overall this season when they escaped with a 1-0 win, scoring in the final minute of play to edge out the Spartans. CNU earned the week off after securing one of the top two seeds, picking up a first-round bye.
Under the direction of second-year head coach
Dan Weiler, the Captains have been a dominant presence in league competition. Including postseason play, CNU boasts a 16-1-1 record against teams in the CAC, while allowing just eight total goals.
Despite a relatively young roster this season, Christopher Newport features a powerful offense that has been balanced by a formidable defense. The back line is especially young, led in the middle by 2013 CAC Rookie of the Year
Sam Rabinek in her second year, and rookie
Kira Warner posting a successful first season. Seniors
Erin O'Shaughnessy and
Kelsey Thomas flank the pair in the back, while all four play in front of sophomore netminder
Haley Casanova. In just two years, Casanova is well on her way up the charts in the CNU record book, securing 13 shutouts with a career 0.74 goals against average in nearly 3000 minutes of action.
Offensively, the Semifinal matchup will feature a pair of the league's top weapons and leading scorers. CNU will count on sophomore
Victoria Perry, ranked second in the CAC with 35 points, while Frostburg State looks to senior Stephanie Fazenbaker, ranked third with 33 points.
The teams are fairly evenly matched on paper, as both offenses have scored 42 goals this season, while the CNU defense has allowed 14 goals compared to 16 for the Bobcats. In the regular season matchup, Frostburg State was the only team in the league that CNU did not beat, picking up a 1-1 draw just two weeks ago in the second to last game of the season.
The winner of Wednesday night's semifinal action will advance to the CAC Championship Game on Saturday, November 8 against the winner of the other CAC Semifinal matchup. That game features the second-seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls versus sixth-seeded Mary Washington at 2:00 pm on Wednesday.
