CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Allie Hackbarth and
Belle Tunstall have been named to the first-team All-South Region squad by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association after piecing together outstanding senior campaigns for the Christopher Newport field hockey team.
It marks the ninth straight season that the Captains have placed a pair of players on the first-team All-Region squad. The honor is the first for Hackbarth and the second of Tunstall's career after she also collected first-team accolades last year.
Hackbarth earned the award following a tremendous senior season. Leading the way on the midfield unit, she was a first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference selection while starting all 19 games. During that time, she contributed nine points on the offensive end, including three goals. Also anchoring the attacking and defensive penalty corner units, she contributed a crucial defensive save at No. 14 Mary Washington during the CAC Semifinals.
A two-time All-Conference selection, Hackbarth ranks fourth in CNU history with 67 games started and fifth with 76 career appearances. Her 4,125 minutes played also rank fifth in program history. During that time, she posted 29 career points, including 11 assists. She also registered three defensive saves and tallied three game-winning goals.
Joining Hackbarth on the first-team All-Region squad, Tunstall earned the honor following a record-breaking campaign. The senior speedster established nearly every offensive career record during the year. Compiling 20 points during the 2014 campaign, she eventually led the squad with seven goals and six assists. Guided by that performance, she set new program marks with 115 career points and 33 assists. She also equaled the all-time goals record with 41.
A two-time first-team All-Conference and All-Region selection, Tunstall also was a first-team All-American last season. Along with her offensive marks, she ranks third in CNU history with 78 games played and 10th with 61 starts. She also sits second all-time with 10 game-winning goals, including a pair in 2014.
Together, Hackbarth and Tunstall helped lead Christopher Newport to the 2014 CAC Championship game while notching a 12-7 overall record.
