GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Camry Green scored 18 points and hauled in 17 rebounds to lead the 18th-ranked Captains (1-0) to a season-opening victory on the road, over Guilford College (0-1). CNU captured a 12-point win in the opener, dropping the Quakers by a final score of 73-61, led by three players in double figures.

CNU scored 32 points in the paint and had a strong performance at the free-throw line, knocking down 24 shots at the line.

The junior class got things started in the game as Kendra Stone picked off a pass and classmate Jordan Miller knocked down the first trey of the season on CNU's second possession. The pair combined for eight of the Captains' first ten points with a pair of three-pointers made.

Guilford rallied to take an 18-16 lead with 9:12 remaining in the first half, but Stone knocked down her second long-range jumper of the first half to re-take the lead, 19-18 just over a minute later. Green took over in the final seven minutes of the half, dropping in a layup before a three-point play on back-to-back possessions. She scored all nine of her first-half points in a four minute burst at the end of the first half.

Heading into the intermission, the teams were dead-locked at 34 points. Anais Weatherly knocked down a three-pointer for the Quakers to take a lead, but CNU rookie Bailey Dufrene closed the half with a jumper to tie things up at the half.

The Captains put up a 6-0 run to start the second half, and built an early lead to eight points on four different occasions just seven minutes into the second stanza. Dufrene sank a three-pointer with 13:01 to give CNU a 51-43 advantage, but again Guilford would not go away. A quick 9-0 burst over the next two minutes, led by a Weatherly trey and fast-break layup, got the Quakers back on top, 52-51.

The young CNU squad did not lose their composure, though, and tipped momentum back in their favor on a combination play by a pair of rookies. Jalynn Ponzo set up Sam Porter for the go-ahead bucket with 10:30 remaining, and the Captains never trailed again. Holding the Quakers off by a two-possession lead for much of the remainder, the Captains sealed the game at the free-throw line, hitting five of six in the final minutes.

In all, CNU knocked down 24-of-29 attempts from the charity stripe for an 82.8% mark, while also hitting at a 41.5% clip from the field on 22-of-53 shooting. The defense held Guilford to just 32.3% shooting on 21-of-65 attempts, while picking up six blocked shots and five steals.

Green's overall performance was the best of the night, shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. She finished with 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, with three blocks and a steal. Stone poured in a career-high 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting with five boards and three steals, while Dufrene rounded out the double figure scoring for CNU with 15 points. She was an impressive 8-for-10 from the free-throw line in her collegiate debut.

Weatherly led all scorers with 20 points, adding 13 rebounds to lead the way for Guilford. Brittany Drew tacked on 10 points for the home team.

CNU will finish out play in the 2014 Guilford Marriott Invitational on Sunday, when they take on Roanoke College at Noon.
