YORK, Pa. -- One of the biggest tests in conference play will come early in 2014, as the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team travels to York College of Pennsylvania for a Saturday afternoon tilt with the Spartans. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available, as a re-match of the 2013 CAC Championship Game kicks off at Noon.
The Captains and Spartans are tied atop the conference standings, still early in the league schedule. Both teams have started the year with a 5-2-2 overall record, 1-0-0 in the CAC. Both teams are coming off wins over Wesley College in their league opener this week.
CNU managed a 5-0 shutout over the Wolverines, led by two-goal efforts from senior
Sarah Perrett and junior
Lindsay Mondloch. Perrett is second on the team in scoring with 12 points, coming on six goals this season. Sophomore
Victoria Perry ranks second in the league in scoring with 20 total points on nine goals and two assists.
Defensively, sophomore
Haley Casanova and rookie
Carly Maglio are splitting time in goal for head coach
Dan Weiler. The two young keepers are having strong seasons, combining for a team goals against average under 1.00. Maglio has allowed four goals for a 1.00 GAA, posting a 73.3% save percentage, and Casanova has given up five goals for a 1.01 GAA and a 75% save percentage.Â
Last season, Christopher Newport captured a 1-0 win over the Spartans in the regular season before matching up again in the CAC Championship Game, where York came away with a 1-1 draw, winning in penalty kicks.Â
The Spartans are unbeaten in five of their last six games, posting a record of 3-1-2 in that stretch. York is coming off a 3-1 win over Wesley in their conference opener on Wednesday, as Beth Bunn, Traci Mohl and Jordan Neiheiser all scored for the Spartans. The offense has been sparse, with just ten goals scored in the first nine games, and spread out between seven different players. Bunn, Mohl and Jordan Snook are the team leaders in scoring with four points apiece.Â
Defensively, York has been very difficult to score on, allowing a meager five goals this season. Starting keeper Melanie Glessner has allowed just three of them and boasts an impressive 0.37 goals against average with four shutouts. The senior netminder has stopped 33 shots for a save percentage of 91.7%.Â
