FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 2014 Capital Athletic Conference postseason begins on Saturday, as the fifth-seeded Christopher Newport men's soccer team travels to fourth-seeded Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm kickoff. The Captains (13-3-4) will take on the Eagles (8-7-3) at the Battleground Soccer Complex on the UMW campus, with live stats and live video available.
The 22nd-ranked Captains will be looking to avenge a late-season loss to the Eagles at home, as Mary Washington picked up a 2-1 victory over CNU on Sunday, October 19. Mike Bennett and
Alec Faulkner traded early goals to lock the game at one goal apiece, but a late second-half penalty kick goal from Ben Cisse was enough to capture a win for the road team.
The winning team will advance to face top-seeded Salisbury University (12-1-5) on Wednesday, November 5. The other first-round matchup features #3-seed Frostburg State hosting #6-seed St. Mary's (Md.), with the winner advancing to take on #2 Penn State Harrisburg.
The all-time series between CNU and Mary Washington is highly competitive, with the Captains owning a slight 19-16-3 edge in the matchup. The 2-1 win this season snapped a five-game winning streak in the series for the Captains.
Senior
Jalon Brown and the rest of a talented Captains offense will headline play for CNU heading into the postseason. Brown, already the Captains' all-time leading scorer, is just three goals shy of tying the program record for goals scored, and has already set a new single-season personal high for goals scored with 16. His 38 points are good for the fifth-best single season mark as he has led one of the most potent scoring offenses in the nation, averaging 2.85 goals per game.
Sophomore forward
Patrick Burns has enjoyed a breakout season, with 31 total points on ten goals and 11 assists. Junior
Ryan Balfour, with 11 points, and sophomore
Harry Nodwell, with ten, round out the double figure scorers for Christopher Newport this season. Defensively, seniors
Alec Faulkner,
Tommy O'Neal and
Stephen Landry have each played over 1,600 minutes this season to lead a back line that has allowed a 1.24 goals against average.
Mary Washington has been firing on all cylinders in the final stretch of the season, with multi-goal performances in each of their last six games. In that stretch, the Eagles have posted a 4-1-1 record, setting up their run at a first-round home game in the CAC Tournament. Offensively, five different Mary Washington players have reached double figures, led by sophomore forwards Riley Fisher (17 pts) and Carlos Mendoza (15 pts). In goal, senior Tyler Back has started 10 games, with a 1.32 GAA, and posted a season-high six saves in the win over CNU.
