NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- After an exciting double-overtime victory over Methodist last week, the Christopher Newport football squad returns to action Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium.  The Captains host Ferrum College in USA South Athletic Conference action. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
On paper, the game appears to be one featuring two teams headed in completely opposite directions.
Matt Kelchner's Captains have won two straight games to improve to 2-2 overall and 2-0 atop the conference. CNU's thrilling victory last week in front of a huge Family Weekend crowd vaulted the Captains into first place in the league standings all by themselves. Ferrum comes in near the bottom of the standings with an 0-3 overall mark, and an 0-1 record in the USA South. Kelchner, however, is well aware his team needs to be ready for a battle.
"Ferrum would like nothing more than to come in here and knock us off," Kelchner said. "This is the kind of game that could put them right back into the race. They've got talent, and they will be fired up to play us."
The meeting will be the 14th of the two schools, and the Captains hold a 12-1 series edge. CNU has also won the last ten, including an impressive 58-12 triumph to conclude the season last November at Ferrum.
Although their records are much different, there are striking similarities when comparing the two squads. Both offenses revolve around senior quarterbacks,
Marcus Morrast of the Captains and Tim Reynolds of Ferrum, who both lead their team in rushing yardage for the season.. Morrast was named the USA South's Offensive Player of the Week this week, and has thrown for eight scores and run for six in CNU's first four games. Reynolds has rushed for four touchdowns and thrown for two in Ferrum's three losses.
"Reynolds is a very dangerous player," Kelchner continued. "We've seen him enought to know he can beat you in a lot of ways. He's got a good balance and can really turn a game around quickly. We'll have to play smart defensively to minimize his impact."
Both defenses are giving up large amounts of points. CNU is yielding 38 points per game while Ferrum is giving up 40 points per game on average. Ferrum has particularly struggled stopping the run, giving up an average of 292 yards per game on the ground.
The game will be the third of five home dates for the Captains in 2014. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at POMOCO Stadium. It will be Military Appreciation Night, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
