NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Win and get in. With other elements of the Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament out of their control on Wednesday, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team can still earn its own way in if they can seal a victory at home on Senior Night, hosting the Marymount University Saints at 7:00 pm. The Captains (12-3-4, 3-2-3) will face Marymount (3-14-0, 1-7-0) with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com/live.
The critical matchup comes in the final game of the regular season, which will be played after six seniors are honored prior to their final home regular season kickoff. Four teams have already secured berths into the 2014 CAC Tournament, but the final two seeds will be decided by the final games played on Wednesday.
For CNU, the equation is simple: a win gets you in. The other games that will play a factor in the postseason race include Frostburg State vs. Southern Virginia at 6:00 pm and York (Pa.) vs. St. Mary's (Md.) at 3:30 pm. With a number of different possibilities, CNU and Frostburg have the upper hand as a loss for the Spartans in the early game would also clinch the postseason for the Captains and Bobcats. The Captains can finish as high as fourth and as low as seventh, and out of the playoff picture.
Christopher Newport dropped to No. 22 in the D3soccer.com national rankings this week after an 0-2-1 performance in league play over their last three games. The league's most potent offense has slowed, scoring just one goal in each of those contests, but is still one of the most formidable in the nation. Led by senior
Jalon Brown and sophomore
Patrick Burns, the Captains are averaging 2.74 goals per game, outscoring opponents more than 2:1. Brown has continued to add to his illustrious career with a league-leading 34 points on 15 goals and four assists, while Burns has broken out with 31 points on 10 goals and 11 assists.
Defensively, CNU is has a 1.25 goals against average with six shutouts this season. Seniors
Tommy O'Neal,
Alec Faulkner and
Stephen Landry have led the way on a veteran back line, while junior goalkeeper
Sam Lesko has started ten games in place of the injured
Nolan Mann.
Marymount comes into Wednesday's game playing the role of spoiler. The Saints are already out of the playoff picture with just one win in conference play, and are riding a five-game losing streak. The defense has allowed 46 goals this season while the offense has scored 21. Junior goalkeeper Logan Cropper has started all but one game this season, posting a GAA of 2.79 with 101 saves. Offensively, Marymount has gotten eight goals from sophomore Ahmed Elmanialawy to lead the way, while rookie Tristan Munoz has added one goal and seven assists for nine points.
