FROSTBURG, Md. -- The CNU women's soccer team, fresh off a No. 6 ranking in Wednesday's NCAA Regional Rankings, have locked up a berth in the CAC Tournament and, with two games remaining, continue to muscle for playoff positioning. This weekend, the Captains (11-3-2, 7-0-0) will travel to Frostburg State University (10-4-3, 4-2-1), who are also looking to improve their postseason seeding, currently tied for fourth in the league standings. Kickoff for Saturday's conference game is set for 2:00 pm at Bobcat Stadium.
The Bobcats will provide a live stats feed as well as a live video webcast through their website, with links available at the women's soccer schedule on CNUsports.com.Â
Christopher Newport is in great shape to earn a first-round bye in this year's CAC Tournament, with any one of three things clinching it on Saturday. First, the Captains control their own destiny and win or a draw would clinch CNU as one of the top two seeds, earning the Captains a first-round bye. The same result for Salisbury in a game vs York (Pa.) on Saturday at 12:30 would also earn the Captains' a top two finish, eliminating any chance at a three-way tie with St. Mary's (Md.). Finally, anything but a win for the Seahawks against Southern Virginia would also eliminate them from contention for one of the top two spots.Â
The Captains have been stellar in conference play all season, rolling through the league witha  perfect 7-0-0 record. Last time out, CNU needed extra time against Mary Washington, but came away with their seventh straight conference win in overtime, 1-0, after rookie defender
Kira Warner snuck home her second career game-winning goal. In two years under head coach
Dan Weiler, CNU women's soccer has compiled an impressive 14-1-0 overall record in league play for a winning percentage of over 93%.Â
Warner not only helped offensively on Wednesday night, but she has been a part of a dominant defense in league play that has allowed just two goals in nearly 640 minutes of action for a goals against average of 0.28. Warner and sophomore
Sam Rabinek play in the middle, while rookie
Carly Melkus and seniors
Erin O'Shaughnessy and
Kelsey Thomas combine to fill the outside spots for the formidable defense. The group has allowed just over five shots per game in conference play, and just over two per game on-frame. That has made the job of goalkeepers
Carly Maglio and
Haley Casanova relatively easy, forced to make just 14 saves combined in CAC action this season. Casanova has yet to be scored on in conference play, with nearly 413 minutes of shutout soccer; for the whole season, she has allowed just seven goals and ranks second in the conference in goals-against average at 0.70.Â
Offensively, the Captains continue to be a dangerous attacking group, led by one of the league's premier scoring options in sophomore
Victoria Perry. Ranked second in the league in all three major offensive categories, Perry has piled up 32 points on 13 goals and six assists. She is among the nation's leaders in game-winning goals, with six, and is at the forefront of an offense averaging 2.50 goals per game. Seniors
Sarah Perrett and
Joy Piirto have also posted stellar final seasons, with 15 points apiece heading into Saturday's action.
The Bobcats also feature a dangerous scoring weapon in senior and two-time All-CAC forward Stephanie Fazenbaker. She has scored 11 times this season, with four assists, to lead Frostburg State with 26 points. With Fazenbaker leading the way, FSU also features a potent attack, averaging 2.24 goals per game this season. Erin Worthman, with six goals and six assists, and Chelsie McCoy, with six goals and four assists, are also approaching 20-point seasons for the Bobcats.Â
On the defensive side of the ball, Frostburg has leaned heavily on goalkeeper Katie Smith, who has started between the pipes in all 17 games this season. With 61 saves and a save percentage of over 82%, the senior keeper has posted a 0.74 goals against average so far this year.Â
Following Saturday's game, the Captains will close out the regular season with a road contest at Salisbury University (9-4-3, 6-1-0) on Wednesday, October 29.Â
