FROSTBURG, Md. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will wrap up its regular season road schedule on Saturday at 11 a.m. when the Captains take on Frostburg State in a Capital Athletic Conference clash at Bobcat Stadium.
CNU sits at 10-5 on the season and 2-2 in the CAC. The Captains are currently in fourth-place in the league standings but sit just half a game behind third-place St. Mary's. Frostburg State enters the weekend with a 6-10 record, including an 0-4 mark in conference action.
For those fans unable to make it to Saturday's game, the Bobcats will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at FrostburgSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
The Captains come into the weekend after posting a pair of thrilling overtime victories during their previous two outings. Last Friday, CNU took down Centre, 2-1, in overtime. Four days later, Christopher Newport tripped up St. Mary's, 4-3, in double-overtime.
Allie Hackbarth,
Lisa Murphy, and
Carol Thompson all contributed a goal and an assist during the two games. Murphy eventually added the game-winner against the Colonels before
Belle Tunstall came through with the final nail against the Seahawks on Tuesday.
Tunstall, who leads the team with 18 points this season, became the third player in CNU history to record 40 career goals with her overtime clincher against St. Mary's. She is currently one of only four active players in the NCAA with 40 career goals and 30 assists. Entering Saturday's game, she is just one goal shy of matching Wendy Wilson's program record of 41. Tunstall already owns the career points and assists marks at CNU.
Along with Tunstall,
Taylor Williams also has six goals this season, while Thompson has 10 points and sits second on the team with four assists. Hackbarth has also had a strong senior campaign with three goals and three helpers.
On the defensive end,
Savanah Cummings and
Bailey Lien have split time in the cage and combined for an .842 save percentage and a 1.58 goals-against-average. The two standouts have also helped the Captains register six shutouts. Equally impressive along the back line,
Sarah Miller and
Alexa Hendrickson have four defensive saves this season.
Frostburg State comes into Saturday after snapping a six-game skid with a 5-4 victory over Wilson on Wednesday. Jackie Best led the Bobcats with a pair of goals during the game, while Jacqueline Gover had four saves. Overall this season, Alexandra Darrow has a team-high 30 points, while Best sits second with 24. Gover has compiled a .752 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against-average during her time in the cage.
Following Saturday's battle, Christopher Newport will return to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the regular season finale at Captains Turf Field against No. 16 Mary Washington.
