NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will welcome St. Mary's (Md.) to town for a key Capital Athletic Conference battle on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Captains Turf Field.
CNU enters the match-up with a 9-5 overall record and a 1-2 mark in league action. The squad is currently tied for fourth in the conference standings. St. Mary's comes in at 10-4 with a 3-1 record in the CAC. The Seahawks are in sole possession of third in the league standings.
Longtime rivals, CNU and St. Mary's have met 10 times with the Captains holding an 8-2 lead in the all-time series. Christopher Newport has won the previous four battles, including a 2-0 triumph at St. Mary's last season.

The Captains enter Tuesday having won three of their last four games, including a 2-1 overtime decision against Centre on Friday evening. During that game,
Allie Hackbarth celebrated her Senior Day with a second-half goal before helping out on
Lisa Murphy's game-winner in overtime.
Savanah Cummings continued to do solid work between the pipes, notching seven saves against the Colonels.
Currently, Cummings leads the CAC with an .884 save percentage and has allowed a league-low eight goals in 569 minutes of action. The sophomore has also helped the squad post six shutouts during the season.
Sarah Miller and
Alexa Hendrickson have also played a key role along the back line with four defensive saves apiece.
On the offensive end, 13 Captains have scored at least one goal, including a team-high five by
Belle Tunstall and
Taylor Williams. Tunstall also leads the way with six assists, while Hackbarth and
Carol Thompson have three apiece. Hendrickson has chipped in with a pair of helpers as well.
On Saturday, St. Mary's saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-2 setback against No. 18 Mary Washington. Nina Collins and Grace Reingruber both scored for the Seahawks and Christy Bishop contributed 18 saves, but the Eagles capitalized on an early lead and never looked back to steal the victory.
So far this season, Olivia Edwards has been SMC's top offensive threat and ranks second in the CAC with 15 goals and third with 33 points. Bishop has also been a stalwart in the cage, tallying an .815 save percentage and a 1.73 goals-against-average. Daniella Hanacek has a team-high three defensive saves as well.
Following Tuesday's action, Christopher Newport will hit the road for a trek to Frostburg State this weekend. The Captains will take on the Bobcats at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
