NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- With kickoff scheduled for 5:00 pm on Saturday, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team will host Marymount University (1-11-1, 0-5-0) in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Captains (9-3-2, 5-0-0) look to remain undefeated in league play when they take on the Saints, with live stats and a live video webcast available at CNUsports.com/live.
Prior to the game's start, head coach
Dan Weiler will honor a group of seven players as part of a special Senior Day ceremony. With four games still left to play in the regular season schedule, the Class of 2014 has already amassed a record of 46-23-5, for a winning percentage of over 65%. In conference play, the Captains' fourth-year players have posted an impressive 26-5-1 overall mark for an 82.8% winning percentage.
CNU is coming off an impressive 3-0 shutout over St. Mary's College (Md.) on Thursday night, led by sophomore
Victoria Perry. The Captains' leading scorer factored into all three goals against the Seahawks, scoring twice and adding an assist. She now has scored 27 points on 11 goals and five assists, ranking second in the league in points, goals and third in assists.
The Captains' offense has outscored opponents, 33-13, this season, while outshooting opponents nearly three to one. The dominant offense features four double figure scorers including Perry. Senior
Sarah Perrett, with seven goals (14 pts), senior
Joy Piirto, with five goals and one assist (11 pts), and junior
Lindsay Mondloch, with three goals and four assists (10 pts), round out the top scorers for CNU.
Defensively, Christopher Newport has come into form, allowing just 13 goals all season, including eight combined in the team's three losses. In other words, CNU has allowed just five goals in its 11 other games, boasting six shutouts. Sophomore
Haley Casanova and rookie
Carly Maglio have split time between the pipes, with both posting strong seasons in 2014. Casanova has allowed seven goals in 715 minutes of action for a 0.88 goals against average, while Maglio's six goals allowed in 540 minutes has earned a 1.00 goals against average.
Heading into Saturday evening's contest, the Marymount Saints are riding a five-game losing streak since starting league play. Opponents have outscored Marymount, 14-2, in that stretch, as the Saints have slipped to 1-11-1 overall this season. Sophomore forward Chloe McAuliffe is the team's leading scorer with five goals and one assist for 11 points. No other MU player has scored more than six points yet this season, as the team has been outscored 33-14.
CNU will host one more game, taking on Mary Washington at Captains Field on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 pm. The team will then close out the regular season on the road at Frostburg State University and at Salisbury University.
