NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Riding a ten-game unbeaten streak, the Christopher Newport University men's soccer team will host a conference matchup versus St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday evening, with kickoff slated for 5:30 pm. The Captains, ranked No. 11 in Tuesday's NSCAA National Rankings, are 11-1-3 overall this season with a 2-0-2 mark in conference play, and will take on a Seahawks squad that is 7-6-0 overall, 3-1-0 in the CAC.
The 11th-ranked Captains are coming off their third draw of the season, failing to score for the first time this season in a scoreless tie with Frostburg State. Even after being held off the scoreboard, though, the Captains still rank as one of the top offenses in the nation. Over the last five games, CNU is outscoring their opponents 15-2, led by the league's leading scorers in senior
Jalon Brown and sophomore
Patrick Burns. CNU ranks 15th nationally in scoring offense and in the top five in total goals, assists and points.Â
Brown, coming off back-to-back All-American seasons, continues to impress in his final season with a 32-point effort on 14 goals and four assists. Last week, he broke the program's all-time scoring record and continues to threaten the all-time mark for career goals scored, just five shy of the record. He ranks fourth nationally among the active career leaders with 119 total points and is one of only eight players nationwide to reach 25 goals and 25 assists over the last four years.
Burns has helped solidify the threat offensively, trailing his senior leader by just one point with 31 so far this season, scoring ten goals and adding 11 assists. His eleven helpers ranks third nationally and leads the league by a pair in his second year with the Captains. Junior
Ryan Balfour rounds out the double-figure scoring for CNU, with 10 points on four goals and two assists.Â
Defensively, CNU has lowered its goals against average to 1.08 for the season, led by senior defenders
Alec Faulkner,
Tommy O'Neal and
Stephen Landry. Rookie
Zach Douglass has filled into the starting lineup recently, helping anchor a defense that has allowed just 8.4 shots per game this season.Â
Coming into Wednesday night's matchup, the Seahawks of St. Mary's College features a strong defense that has allowed just 14 goals through their first 13 games this season. Rookie goalkeeper Zach Haussler has ten starts between the pipes for St. Mary's (Md.), making 37 saves with a 0.98 goals against average. Offensively, St. Mary's (Md.) has been led by three players with four goals so far this season, as Alessandro Burlew, Matthew Braun and Zach Fontenot have each scored four times.Â
