No. 9 CNU Men's Soccer Takes on Frostburg State in League Play Saturday

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Returning to the pitch for the first time since an eight-goal explosion against Southern Virginia University earlier this week, the ninth-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team travels to Frostburg State University (7-3-2, 2-1-0) for a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference match. The Bobcats have just one loss in their last seven games while CNU enters the game riding a nine-game unbeaten streak running their overall record to 11-1-2, with a 2-0-1 mark in league play. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm, with live stats and live video available online.

The Captains have won all three of the previous matchups with Frostburg State, including a 5-1 victory last season in their first ever conference head-to-head battle. This year, the Bobcats defense has been very strong, allowing just one goal in their last seven contests, posting a 5-1-1 record in that span. On the season, Frostburg has allowed just four goals in 135 shot attempts, for an impressive 0.32 goals against average. Conversely, the CNU offense is one of the most formidable, ranking in the top five among over 400 schools in the nation in goals, assists and points scored this season.

Coming off one of the most impressive performances of the season, the CNU offense will look to continue to roll this season behind leading scorers Jalon Brown and Patrick Burns. Both have already eclipsed the 30-point mark for the season and both posted hat tricks in the victory over Southern Virginia. With his third goal of the match, Brown tied his career single-season high for goals scored in a season with 14, and also surpassed Winston Mattheisen as the program's all-time leading scorer. He currently has 32 points on the season, just seven shy of his single-season high of 39 set during his sophomore All-American campaign. Burns, with 31 points, is also threatening to join the top ten single-season marks in program history, trailing a spot in that group by just four points.

The offense comes from all over, however, with 14 different Captains registering at least one goal this season, leading the team to the ninth-ranked scoring offense in the nation with 3.14 goals per game. CNU ranks fourth nationally in assists per game and fifth in points per game, while also ranking no worse than third in total goals, assists and points this season. Both Brown and Burns are ranked among the top eight nationally in total points, trailing the nation's scoring leader, Austin Gerber, from Keuka College by just five and six points, respectively.

Frostburg's stingy defense will look to stymie the CNU attack, having been able to slow nearly every attack they've encountered thus far. No team has scored more than one goal against the Bobcats yet this season, led by sophomore goalkeeper Hassan Mostafa with a 0.34 goals against average. Over the last seven games, FSU has allowed just one goal in 650 minutes, good for a nearly unfathomable 0.14 GAA with six shutouts. Offensively, the Bobcats have scored just 15 goals, with four different players pitching in a pair.
