NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team will wrap up its two-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when CNU hosts Wesley in a Capital Athletic Conference showdown at noon at Captains Turf Field.
CNU enters the weekend with a 7-4 record, including an 0-1 mark in league play. Wesley comes in at 5-7 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Longtime rivals, the Captains and Wolverines have battled seven times with CNU holding a 6-1 lead in the all-time series. Christopher Newport posted a pair of victories last year after upending Wesley, 1-0, in Dover before toppling the squad, 2-1, in double-overtime during the CAC semifinals.

The Captains enter the weekend after upending Bridgewater, 2-0, on Wednesday evening. During the game,
Alexa Weaver and
Taylor Williams both scored for CNU, while
Allie Hackbarth added an assist. On the defensive end,
Savanah Cummings came through with eight saves on the way to her first career shutout.
Christopher Newport has been led by a suffocating defensive unit, which has allowed 1.29 goals-per-game this season. Cummings has been especially stingy, registering a .914 save percentage.
Bailey Lien has also compiled a .765 mark during her 385 minutes of work.
On the offensive end,
Belle Tunstall leads CNU with 16 points and six assists. She is also tied with Williams for the team lead with five goals. Freshman
Carol Thompson has also played a role in five goals this year, including three assists.
Wesley comes into the weekend on a six-game skid, including a 6-0 setback against Rowan on Wednesday. Laura Mears currently leads the Wolverines with 10 points, while Morgan Seymour boasts a team-high two assists to go along with three defensive saves. Sarah Daniels has led the way between the pipes, compiling a .787 save percentage and a 1.89 goals-against-average in 705 minutes of work.
Following Saturday's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on Tuesday when the Captains travel to Salisbury for a 6 p.m. showdown with the top-ranked Sea Gulls.
