GREENSBORO, N.C. -- With two minutes remaining in a Wednesday afternoon match against Greensboro College, the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team was down one and scrambling for a late equalizer. As the seconds ticked away, the Captains (8-2-1) turned to their leading scorer, senior All-American Jalon Brown, who converted on the tying goal with 1:28 showing on the clock. With momentum swinging in their direction, CNU turned near defeat into sudden victory, as sophomore Preston Key connected on the gamewinner in the first overtime period.

CNU dropped the Pride (4-6-0) in overtime, 2-1, snapping a three-game winless streak against their former conference foes.

Greensboro took an early lead on the Captains, scoring in the 12th minute of action when Whit Maupin posted his first tally of the season. He scored on a through ball from George Dimopoulos on the right side.

Then began the countdown for the home team. The Pride kept one of the most potent offensive attacks in the nation at bay for nearly an entire match. The Captains' fast-paced attack had chances on net, but Logan Rohde was up to the task for Greensboro, making six saves. Three straight stops came at the end of the first half, when sophomore Patrick Burns blistered a pair, and senior Alec Faulkner added a third shot on-goal in a four-minute span.

The second stanza was played mostly in the middle of the park, as both teams combined for just eight shots until the strike from Brown in the 89th minute. The shot was set up by Burns, who assisted on both goals for the Captains on Wednesday. A flick to Brown at the top of the box gave one of the program's all-time leading scorers enough space to hammer a shot home for the dramatic game-tying score.

The match would quickly flip, as CNU turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win in just under seven minutes of game time. The second half closed out at 1-1, but with the momentum shifted, the Captains dominated the quick overtime set. Sophomore Harry Nodwell took a quick shot less than 30 seconds in, flying just wide. The only other attempt would come 5:17 into the extra period, when Key connected on his first goal of the season. It would be a big one, as the outside midfielder became the seventh different player to notch a game-winning goal this season, sending CNU home with a victory off an assist by Burns.

With the two helpers, the sophomore forward ran his team- and league-leading assist total to seven. He now has 17 points on the season, pairing those assists with five goals.

The game was meant to be Christopher Newport's final non-conference tilt of the year, but a schedule adjustment has been made to this weekend's schedule. First, the conference matchup versus Wesley College has been moved up to Friday, October 3, as the Captains travel to Dover, Del. for a 7:00 pm kickoff. That move was made to ensure a make-up date against the Randolph College WildCats was possible on Sunday, October 5, in what will now be the last non-league game of the 2014 regular season. That game will played at Captains Field at 6:00 pm.
