DOVER, Del. -- The second-half offense was at it again on Friday night, as the 13th-ranked Christopher Newport men's soccer team poured in three goals after halftime to cruise past Wesley College in CAC action. The Captains improved to 9-1-2 overall, 1-0-1 in the CAC after leading scorers Jalon Brown and Patrick Burns combined for seven points, including back-to-back goals in the final five minutes. Wesley falls to 5-4-1 overall with the loss, 0-2-0 in the CAC.

With the three additional tallies on Friday night, the Captains have now scored 23 of their 34 goals this season in the second half for nearly two-thirds of their total scores. The win was also the fourth shutout of the season, as the defense held up allowing just five total shots in the game.

The early action favored the home team, as Robert Dina and Eman Amao each put an attempt on goal in the first eight minutes. CNU junior goalkeeper Nolan Mann turned away both attempts, including one off a corner kick. In the 33rd minute, Shane Casey put the third attempt on-frame for the Wolverines, but again Mann turned it away.

With just four shots on-goal in the match, Mann had already skirted the bulk of the offense for Wesley. An early shot in the second half by Will Mileski was saved again, and the Wolverines were held without a shot on-goal for the rest of the match.

Meanwhile, the CNU offense would get going early in the second half. Just over 11 minutes into the second stanza, junior forward Ryan Balfour made a run down the left side, dribbling by a defender before crossing a pass to the far post where Brown was waiting to knock home the eventual game-winning goal. Brown's tenth goal of the season would hold up as his first gamewinner of the season and the 13th of his career.

Led by three attempts on-frame from defender Alec Faulkner, the Captains continued to pressure Wesley goalkeeper Zack Baker. The second goal would not come until the 87th minute, though, when Brown converted on his second score of the match. With just over three minutes remaining in the match, Burns set up the goal with a pass to the right side. Baker charged out of the box to try and stop the senior's attempt, but Brown placed a perfect shot over his arms into the left corner of the goal.

With the game in hand, the Captains would get an insurance goal from Burns in the final minute of the game. With just 30 seconds remaining, the sophomore forward collected a loose ball and from 25 yards out, blistered a hard shot into the back of the net. His sixth goal of the season gave him an even 20 points on the season, joining Brown as the league's only 20-point scorers through the first 12 games of action.

CNU held a significant 16-5 advantage in total shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on-goal. Mann saved all four shots on-goal for Wesley, playing nearly 87 minutes before Sam Lesko came in for the final 3:09 to help lock down the shutout.

Brown's four point effort moved him up the all-time charts again, for both career goals and points. First, with the two goals he is now tied for third with Oscar Gomez-Romero with 43 career scoring strikes. Also, with the four-point effort, Brown is now tied with Ian MacPherson for third in career points, with 112. He now has 25 points for the third straight season and his 13 game-winning goals also is tied for third best in program history.

The Captains will return to action on Sunday, October 5 as they host Randolph College at 6:00 pm. The WildCats are coming to Captains Field to make up a game that was canceled due to inclement weather earlier this season. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
