NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Shooting woes continued to plague the Captains of Christopher Newport Wednesday night. Playing against Wesley at the Freeman Center, CNU failed to shoot well for the fourth straight game, and it finally cost the Captains a game. Christopher Newport had its seven-game winning streak snapped by the Wolverines, 64-46, in Capital Athletic Conference play.

"I give Wesley credit, they wanted this game more than we did tonight," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "They played harder than we did, and we played on our heels for most of the night. Our team is a work in progress...it's a long season and this is a very good conference."

The Captains made just 16 of 58 shots for 27.6 percent shooting, and just six of 24 from three-point range (25 percent). It was the fourth straight game the Captains have shot below 41 percent.

The loss was the first of the year for CNU in the CAC, as both teams are now 3-1 in league play. The Captains fell to 10-2 overall, while Wesley improved to 10-1 with the victory.

Sophomore forward Evan Thorpe was the only CNU player in double digits, finishing with 14 points. Thorpe also led the Captains with eight rebounds.

Wesley senior guard Eric Selby led all scorers with 20 points, and senior center David Langan posted 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines.

CNU had its only lead of the night when the Captains took a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Wesley built a 12-point lead at the half, 34-22, and then stretched the advantage to as many as 22 in the second half.

The Wolverines, ranked 16th in the country, out-rebounded the Captains by a 41-35 margin. Wesley made 20 of 27 free throws for 74 percent foul shooting.

CNU senior captain Tra Benefield, who averages 19 points per game, was held to seven points, and made just three of 11 shots. Junior guard Mike Cherry, who averages 15 points per game, made just one of eight shots for three points.

The Captains are now 5-2 at home this season, and will put their 5-0 road record on the line with their next two games away from home.

Christopher Newport, ranked 14th in the nation this week, returns to action on Saturday at Penn State Harrisburg. Tipoff time for the Capital Athletic Conference game in Harrisburg, PA, is set for 3:00 p.m. It will be the first meeting ever of the two schools.
