NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport's winning streak reached seven games Saturday, as the Captains defeated Frostburg State, 72-59. The Capital Athletic Conference victory at the Freeman Center improved CNU's record to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Sophomore Connor Laframboise led the way, sinking six three-pointers, to finish with a game-high 20 points. Senior Tra Benefield and junior Mike Cherry added 11 points each.

"They packed it in against us," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "They played zone almost the whole way and we were able make some big shots. We're a work in progress, and I really like our effort and our tenacity."

The teams battled through a first half that featured eight lead changes. The Captains pulled away before halftime, opening a 32-24 lead at the intermission, and never relinquished the lead through the second half.

Laframboise caught fire in the second half, knocking down four of his six threes in the final twenty minutes. He finished the game 7 of 14 from the field, and 6 or 11 from beyond the arc.

After a rough-shooting first half (34 percent), CNU improved in the second half by making 11 of 22 shots to pull away in the final minutes.

Laframboise and Benefield led the Captains in rebounds with nine each. The teams ended tied on the boards with 43 per side.

"We knew they would challenge us," Krikorian continued. "They played hard and gave us a battle. We're going to see a lot of zone defenses all year and theirs was tough tonight."

Frostburg State falls to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in the Capital. The Bobcats were led by junior Jabari Kamau, who scored 19 points.

CNU now leads the series with Frostburg State, 8-4. The 10-1 start for CNU is the best since the 2001-2002 season when the Captains won 14 of their first 15 games.

The Captains, ranked 18th in the nation, return to action Wednesday night with a home game vs. Wesley. Game time at the Freeman Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. for the Capital Athletic Conference game.
