NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday with a 76-69 win over Marymount at the Freeman Center. The Captains sank a season-high 13 three-pointers in the triumph, and improved to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Senior
Tra Benefield, who contributed just three points and one rebound in the opening half, took over by scoring 23 points and pulling down nine rebounds in the second stanza. Benefield's double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds was his third of the season. He was four-for-four shooting from three-point range, all in the second half.
"We did some good things today," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "I thought our effort was solid and we made some big shots. Defensively, we really contained them inside...overall it was a really good win."
The Captains led at the half, 31-27, following a back-and-forth first twenty minutes. The lead changed hands nine times before halftime, but CNU never fell behind in the second half. Christopher Newport opened a 10-point advantage midway through the second half, its biggest lead of the day, and held off the Saints down the stretch.
Benefield, currently 8th on the all-time CNU scoring list, is now just 35 points behind Davon Barton for 7th place. The pre-season All-America has scored 1,573 career points.
Junior
Mike Cherry connected for two threes, and finished the game with 14 points. Cherry is just 20 points from one thousand for his career.
Freshman
Tim Daly posted 10 rebounds as CNU out-rebounded the Saints, 39-32.
CNU made 13 of 22 shots from behind the arc for a sizzling 59 percent.
Marymount, now also 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Capital, was led by 21 points off the bench from freshman Michael Anderson. Junior big man J.C. Hoellich, who was averaging 13 points and eight rebounds per game, saw limited playing time due to foul trouble. Hoellich was held to just three rebounds and no points.
CNU is now 10-0 this season when leading at the half, and the Captains improved to 6-2 at the Freeman Center.
The result puts the Captains and Saints in a tie for fourth place in the CAC. The game was the first meeting of the schools since 2003. CNU now leads the all-time series with the Saints, 14-1.
Following Saturday's action in the Capital, Mary Washington tops the conference with a 7-1 record, followed by Wesley at 6-1 and St. Mary's at 5-2. CNU and Marymount follow at 4-3.
The Captains travel to St. Mary's Wednesday night. Tipoff time is set for 8 p.m. in St. Mary's City, MD, for the Capital Athletic Conference game.
