FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- The Captains of Christopher Newport lost their third straight game Wednesday night, a 76-65 defeat at Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action. CNU went cold in the second half, making just 10 of 31 shots (32 percent) after making 13 of 24 attempts in the opening half (54 percent).
CNU fell to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference with the loss at the Anderson Center. Mary Washington improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in league play.
"They're a really good team and I don't want to take anything away from them," Head Coach
John Krikorian said. "We did a good job defending their top scorer, Bradley Riester, but they had other guys step up. We just didn't do a good enough job."
The Captains trailed at the half, 38-35, after a back-and-forth opening stanza. CNU led by as many as five in the first half before the Eagles grabbed the lead. The teams then exchanged the lead several times early in the second half, but again UMW took the advantage and pulled away. Mary Washington led by as many as 15 in the final minute of the game.
Mary Washington made 31 of 42 free throws in the game for 74 percent shooting. The Captains only got to the line 13 times, making eight shots (62 percent.)
CNU was led by senior
Tra Benefield's 20 points, followed by junior
Mike Cherry's 16. The Captains stayed in the game thanks to three-point shooting, making 11 in all. CNU cooled off by only making four of 17 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Junior Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with 19 points, while senior Dylan Farinet added 18. UMW's top scorer, Bradley Riester, was held to 10 points.
Christopher Newport hosts Marymount Saturday at the Freeman Center. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
