On the women's side, the Captains (10-2, 3-1) will look to extend their five-game winning streak when they take on the Lions (5-7, 1-3). CNU, the 21st ranked team in the country, is off to a great start in their first year in the Capital Athletic Conference, tied for second in the standings.
Seniors
Tia Perry (17.3 ppg) and
Nicole Mitchell (16.6 ppg) are leading the charge for Christopher Newport, while they also rank 1-2 as the team's rebounders. Following a 20-point performance against Wesley on Wednesday night, Mitchell is now just 18 points shy of 1,000 for her career; Perry eclipsed that plateau earlier this year and just went over 1,100.
Rookie guard/forward Kaitlyn Carmo is the team leader statistically for the Lions, averaging 12.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore Kiara Carter is among the league leaders in rebounding, hauling in 9.9 boards per game.
The men's team will be looking to bounce back after their first loss since November, after Wesley snapped the Captains' seven-game winning streak. Ranked 14th in the nation, Christopher Newport is 10-2 overall with a 3-1 mark in league play, taking on a Penn State Harrisburg squad that is 5-7 overall, 2-2 against the conference.
Preseason All-American
Tra Benefield continues to lead CNU, ranking second in the league in scoring at 18.2 points per game. He also ranks in the top five in the CAC in rebounding, hauling in 7.8 boards per game. Three CNU players are averaging in double figures, as Benefield is joined by junior
Mike Cherry (14.2 ppg) and sophomore
Evan Thorpe (10.3 ppg).
The Lions' men's team also features one of the top scorers in the league, as sharp-shooting Will Doyle is pouring in 17.7 points per game. The 6-2 guard is averaging 3.5 made three-pointers per game and is hitting at a 48.1% clip from beyond the arc.
