DELAWARE, Ohio -- A second half goal by Ryan Balfour and a strong defensive effort in goal by sophomore Nolan Mann was enough for the Captains (1-2-1) to come away with a 1-1 draw against Capital University (2-0-1) today, in the adidas® Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
It was the second double-overtime game in as many nights for the Captains, who suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 setback on Friday against the host and 10th-ranked Battling Bishops. Already with more extra time than they bargained for on their trip to Ohio, the Captains would play two more extra periods on Saturday night on the neutral field.
The Crusaders scored first, knocking home an unassisted goal in the 34th minute. R.G. Foley had the score, putting away a loose ball after Mann made a save. It was one of three saves in the period for the CNU keeper, who faced seven shots.
CNU peppered the Capital keeper, Bob Weisgarber, for much of the first half, putting five shots on-frame but were unable to get on the board. It wasn't until the second half when Balfour evened things up at one goal apiece. Just under seven minutes into the second stanza, Balfour volleyed the ball out of the air from the top of the box, past the outstretched arms of Weisgarber.
With things locked up at one, it was the Crusaders who pressured CNU's defense for the remainder, putting nine shots on-goal in the contest, five after halftime. CNU's sophomore keeper was up to the task, though, making four saves in the second half and one in the first overtime period.
In the game, CNU held a slight advantage in overall shots, at 23-22, but both teams managed nine attempts on-goal, with one goal scored. The Captains' leading goal scorer, Jalon Brown, led the way with six tries, while Balfour added four including three on-frame. Florey also had six attempts for Capital, putting four on-goal including his opening strike.
CNU exits the second weekend with a 1-2-1 start to the season, currently riding a three-game winless streak. Head coach Steve Shaw and the Captains will look to right the ship next weekend, as they travel to former conference foes Methodist University on Saturday, September 14 at 3:00 pm.
