DELAWARE, Ohio -- Christopher Newport struck first, and then forced double overtime with a late equalizer against 10th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University (3-0-0), but ultimately were tripped up in double overtime, 3-2, when the Battling Bishops scored the winner with under three minutes remaining. The Captains (1-2-0) got goals from junior Jalon Brown and rookie Keith Phelps.Â
For the second straight game, the Captains suffered a 3-2 setback, but this time did so on the home field of perennial national powers in the adidas® Invitational. Brown's goal was the first tally of the match, giving the Captains a 1-0 edge in the 53rd minute.
After the Bishops controlled most of the first half, outshooting CNU 13-2 in the frame, the Captains came out of the break with a fervor. After several near chances early in the half, Brown finally found the back of the net just over seven minutes in. After a long throw-in, Brown found a seam between two defenders and slipped a low bouncing shot into the right side of the goal.Â
Just under 10 minutes later in the match, the home team tied things up on a corner kick goal scored by Lonnie Barnes. Barnes headed in the score on a nice corner kick from Matt Shadoan. It was the first of two corner-kick assists Shadoan had in the contest.Â
The 10th-ranked Bishops took the lead in the 70th minute, pulling ahead 2-1 on a Colton Bloecher score. CNU continued to battle, however, and peppered the OWU goalkeeper with 10 shots in the second half. He was up to the task, turning away all five shots in the game. Then, with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, the Captains capitalized on a miscue by the keeper. Collin Beemiller found himself leaking out on the left side of the goal box as CNU made a run up the left side. Phelps got by his defender and then chipped a arcing shot over Beemiller's head and into the far side of the goal.Â
With the game knotted up at two, the teams had a fresh slate heading into extra time. CNU's starting goalkeeper, Sean Killion made five stops in goal and Ohio Wesleyan held a 25-12 advantage in shots through the first 90 minutes. In overtime, both teams were turned away on solid opportunities, but the score remained locked at two heading into the second overtime period.Â
Just over a minute into the second overtime, Killion suffered an injury making a save and was forced to leave the contest. Sophomore Nolan Mann stepped in and promptly made a sensational diving save on a corner kick attempt, his only stop of the game. In the 108th minute, the home team earned a corner kick and for the second time in the contest, Shadoan found an open man on the set piece.Â
The Captains will return to action tomorrow, as they take on Capital University (2-0) at 5:00 pm. The Crusaders escaped the opening day of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Colorado College.Â
