NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In a rare weekday afternoon game, the Lynchburg Hornets (9-1) held off the visiting Christopher Newport Captains for just their second loss of the season. The Captains fall to 5-2-1 after a 2-0 setback to the 11th-ranked Hornets, led by a strong defensive effort in goal by rookie
Haley Casanova.
Lynchburg used a pair of early first half goals to build a lead against the Captains. Dessi Dupuy scored in the 13th-, and then again in the 16th-minute, holding off CNU the rest of the way for a 2-0 win. Dupuy's first tally came off a header from about 15 yards out, and held up as the gamewinner. The team leader in goals for the Hornets now has ten scores with the two against CNU on Thursday.
Christopher Newport's freshman goalkeeper gave up the two early goals, but bounced back nicely as the Lynchburg offense continued to pressure her in the box. In the first stanza, the Hornets took 12 shots, but managed just four on-goal. Casanova stopped one, and the team defense kept another attempt out of the goal on a corner kick.
In the second half, CNU pushed the action early in the period, but could not scratch out a goal. Seniors
Emma O'Reilly and
Bupe Okeowo had a couple shots on goal, but Hornets keeper Tess Frelick turned away both attempts. On the other side of the field, Casanova continued to play well, picking up eight more saves in the second half. She matched her career high with nine stops, and just two goals allowed.
CNU will open up conference play with their next game, traveling to Marymount University for the first ever game in the Capital Athletic Conference. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 28.
