SALEM, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team ended a long five-game road trip with a big win, dropping the 17th-ranked Roanoke Maroons (5-1-0) in a 2-0 final. Powered by a pair of goals out of the defensive unit, the Captains improved to 4-2-1 on the season, outshooting the home team 21-8 in the game.
The Captains dominated possession against the nationally-ranked team, as the defense stood tall. Starters
Zack Hopkins,
Tommy O'Neal,
Charlie Dodge and
Sean Christein allowed only eight total shots in the contest, only two of which were on-goal. The Maroons managed one in each stanza, but senior goalkeeper
Sean Killion stopped both to preserve the shutout.
Offensively, CNU raced out to an early lead when Christein also chipped in on the offensive end. After making a run, senior
Caleb Lewis found the defender for his second goal of the season. It was his first game-winner, off of Lewis' second assist of the season. The eventual game-winning goal came just 8:22 into the game.
In the first half, CNU peppered the Roanoke defense with shot attempts, taking 13 shots with five on-goal. Maroons keeper Cole Sinclair allowed the one early goal and stopped four shots in the opening stanza. The Captains defense held Roanoke to just three shots in the half, giving CNU a 13-3 advantage.
After a yellow card was issued to Carl Leist early in the second half, the Captains tacked on an insurance goal just over a minute later in the 55th. Again it was a defender who found the back of the net, when
Tommy O'Neal put away his second goal off an assist by
Jalon Brown. Brown, the leading scorer for CNU, posted his second assist of the season with the scoring strike by O'Neal.
While the shot disparity was a little closer in the second half, at 8-5, the Captains offense continued to pressure Roanoke's back line with a two-goal lead. The team finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 lead in shots on-goal.
Christopher Newport returns home after the five-game road trip over the last 15 days, and will host Lynchburg College at 7:00 pm on September 25. The Wednesday kick-off will include live stats and a live video webcast.
