Men's Soccer Travels to Former Conference Rival Methodist for Saturday Matchup

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Head coach Steve Shaw and the Captains' men's soccer team are making a familiar trip this weekend, traveling to Methodist University for a non-conference matchup on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The Monarchs have opened the year with a 1-2-1 start and will be opening their home slate against the Captains. Live stats are available at CNUsports.com.

CNU (1-2-1) will take on their former conference rivals in the first of two games against USA South opponents this year. Next Wednesday, the Captains will also take on N.C. Wesleyan as part of their current five-game road trip.

Through the first four games this season, junior forward Jalon Brown is leading the offense again, after posting a 39-point season a year ago. Brown has scored three goals and added one assists for seven points so far. Sophomore Ryan Balfour has added two goals while Tommy O'Neal and Keith Phelps have each put away one tally apiece.

Defensively, CNU has split time in goal between senior Sean Killion and sophomore Nolan Mann. Killion has made nine saves and carries a 0.94 goals against average into this weekend, while Mann has made 13 stops so far.

Methodist was picked to win the USA South Athletic Conference Championship in the preseason coaches' poll after going 15-3-3 last season with a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Returning offensive leaders Eric McGinnis and Eirik Nordseth combined for 80 points a year ago, and each has one goal so far this season. Five different Methodist players have scored a goal, while senior defender Hank Tobener has added three assists for a team-high five points.
