NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior forward Jalon Brown, fresh off a first team All-American season a year ago, kicked off the year in the right way on Friday night as he scored both goals in a 2-0 shutout over Randolph-Macon (0-1) In the season-opening Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic. He led the Christopher Newport (1-0) in a dominating performance, as the Captains outshot the Yellow Jackets, 23-3.
Despite controlling possession and getting a handful of good looks on goal in the first half, the Captains found themselves still knotted at zero with R-MC at halftime. CNU took 10 shots in the stanza, including six on-goal. CNU's best chance came a little over halfway into the frame when rookie defender Zack Hopkins played a beautiful ball over the defense into the box. Brown one-touched it to himself, but his hard shot was wide left.
Senior goalkeeper Sean Killion was not pressed in the first half, facing just one shot, that sailed high.
After failing to convert in the first half, the Captains wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second. Junior midfielder Alec Faulkner was fouled from behind just outside of the box on the right side, setting up a set piece for CNU. Brown took the kick himself, and hooked a shot inside the post on the right side, past the diving keeper, Lee Loudermilk.
CNU continued to push the offense, taking 13 shots in the second half. Brown's second tally would come in the 69th minute of action when he took the ball off a midfielder in the attacking third. He had the defense on their heels as he burned up the right side of the field, touched to the middle and then laced a rocket with his left foot. The shot split a pair of defenders and tickled the twine top shelf on the left side of the goal.
Jalon took six shots in the contest, with four on-goal and two scores. Both goals were unassisted as he picked right up where he left off a season ago. In 2012, Brown posted the fourth-highest scoring output in program history, with 39 points, failing to score in just four contests. With the two notches tonight, Brown has scored 20 times in his career.
Killion picked up the shutout victory in his first game this season, forced to make just one save on the night. It was the fifth clean sheet of his career, moving him just one shy of the top ten all-time at CNU.
CNU got contributions from all over the field, including two shots on-frame from Faulkner. Ryan Balfour, Patrick Burns, Sean Christein and Jimmy Grace each added two attempts on the day, whlie 13 different players chipped in for the 23 total shots.
In the first game of the Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic, the Va. Wesleyan Marlins (1-0) also captured a 2-0 victory, shutting out Wesley. CNU will take on the Marlins at 7:30 pm on Saturday, while Wesley and Randolph-Macon compete in the day's first game at 5:00 pm. Live stats will be available for both games.
