Captains Finish Out Regular Season With 7-2 Win At Salisbury

Match Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. -- The CNU men's tennis team picked up five singles wins en route to a 7-2 victory on the road today, dropping Salisbury University (10-7) in the regular season finale. The Captains improve to 14-4 headed into this week's USA South Tournament.

CNU was led by a pair of newcomers on Tuesday, as Chiraag Shetty and Lloyd Luck each posted a pair of wins. The tandem combined for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, getting the Captains out in front early in the match. After splitting the other two doubles matches, Luck got CNU a two-point edge with a quick win at No. 6 singles. He beat Nick Mancuso (6-3, 6-1) to put CNU up, 3-1.

Salisbury pulled back within one before Shetty's win at No. 1 singles over Daniel Albers (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) put CNU within one win of clinching the match. The rest of the day was incredibly competitive, with three of the six singles matches going to a third tiebreaking set. It was CNU, though, that came out on top of all three of those tight matches, including the match-clinching win from senior Robbie Wagner at No. 5.

Wagner faced Adam Goldberger and won the first set, 6-4, but saw the match evened after a 4-6 setback. In the pro-set, the two battled back-and-forth before CNU's senior pulled away with a 10-7 win.

Will Sloan and Joey Manilla also won at 3 and 4 singles after pairing for a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles.

CNU, the number-two seed in this week's USA South Tournament, will open play in Rocky Mount, N.C. against seventh-seeded LaGrange. The match will begin at 9:00 am on Friday, April 12.
