SALEM, Va. -- With just one more game remaining before the USA South Tournament, the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to keep its momentum entering the postseason when the Captains battle Roanoke on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
In the midst of a 13-game winning streak, CNU currently stands at 13-1 on the season. Roanoke has won three straight decisions and boasts a 6-5 overall record. The Maroons also hold a 6-3 mark in the all-time series between the two programs, although the Captains triumphed 14-6 in Newport News last season.
Inching towards historic territory,
Ashton Marshall enters the weekend ranked second in the nation with 56 goals and fifth with 69 points. She is just three goals shy of cracking the program's top-five single-season scoring list. Last year, she posted 64 goals, which stands second in CNU history. Katilin Quigley owns the top mark with 76 in 2010.
Guiding the offensive attack along with Marshall,
Elena Obregon is second on the team with 37 goals and 56 points.
Jessica Singer has also scored 31 times, while
Becca Geist leads the squad with 23 assists.
Lauren King has been well-balanced all year long, chipping in with 27 goals, 21 assists, and a team-high 43 draw controls.
On the defensive end,
Hanna Slough has been terrific between the pipes, posting a .500 save percentage and a 5.75 goals-against-average.
Emily Johnson has also caused 24 turnovers for the Captains, while Geist, Marshall, and
Kelly Lane all have at least 10 apiece.
Ultimately one of the top facilitators in the country, Allison Bonanno leads the Roanoke attack. Entering the week, she has 53 assists, which marks the most in the nation. She has also scored 22 times, while Darragh Evarts leads the Maroons with 43 goals this year. Lauren Curtin has been the squad's top goalie, posting a .443 save percentage and a 13.17 goals-against-average.
The Captains will be back in action on April 12 for the semifinals of the USA South Tournament in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Christopher Newport will face the winner of the Piedmont – Meredith first round match-up at 1 p.m. next Friday.
