No. 17 CNU Women’s Lacrosse Wraps Up USA South Action against N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Boasting a 12-game winning streak, the 17th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will look to keep its roll intact when the squad wraps up USA South action on Wednesday when the squad travels to N.C. Wesleyan for a 3 p.m. battle at Scalf Field.

Yielding just over two goals per game during their last six contests, the Captains have been on a tear lately and sit at 12-1 on the season, including 7-0 in the USA South. N.C. Wesleyan is 0-11 and 0-7 in league play.

Entering the match-up, Christopher Newport holds a 5-0 all-time record against the Battling Bishops. Last season, the Captains came away with a 21-0 victory.

Unquestionably one of the most balanced teams in the country, CNU ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense and sixth in scoring defense. Overall, the Captains are averaging just over 17.5 goals-per-game and allowing fewer than six to their opponents. The squad also sits among the top-10 in points, scoring margin, and winning percentage.

Slamming the door on the opposition, Hanna Slough stands sixth in the nation with a 5.93 goals-against-average and also in the top-50 in save percentage. She has been aided on the defensive end by an incredible collection of stalwarts, including reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week Kelly Lane. Emily Johnson also leads the team with 21 caused turnovers, while Rachel Tomlinson and Becca Geist have been just as stingy.

Along with her work on the defensive end, Geist also leads the team with 37 draw controls, while Lauren King ranks second with 35. Overall, six Captains have at least 10 draw controls and the team has collected over 70 more than their opponents during the 2013 campaign.

Simply dominant on the offensive end, Ashton Marshall is second in the nation with 55 goals and fifth with 66 points. Freshman Elena Obregon has also bolstered the CNU attack, ranking among the top-50 nationally in goals, assists, and points. So far this season, the first-year standout has scored 31 times and chipped in with 19 assists.

Offensively, Jessica Singer has also added a potent punch to the lineup, ranking third on the team with 30 goals while chipping in with nine assists as well. King also ranks third on the team with 42 points, while Geist is fifth with 33.

Ultimately looking for their first win of the season, the Battling Bishops dropped a 15-7 decision to LaGrange on Senior Day last Saturday. Ashley Marks led the team with three goals during the game, while Laine Hicks chipped in with two scores and a pair of assists.

Throughout the year, Marks has been N.C. Wesleyan's most consistent player, scoring 16 goals to go along with two assists. Haley Hopkins and Connor Wright have also chipped in with double-digit goal totals. On the defensive end, Marissa Santos has made 110 saves this season, while Jade Gold leads the team with 15 caused turnovers.

Heading to Salem, Virginia this weekend, Christopher Newport will face its final test before the USA South Tournament when the Captains square off against Roanoke on Saturday at 2 p.m.
